will they ever make the type R AWd?
When it becomes a Hybrid or PHEV, so likely the next generation or more. That being said, why would they even be pressured to do so, it's already the fastest around a track of all the hot hatches. In order to be the fastest 0-60 they wouldn't just need AWD, they'd need an automatic, likely a DSG.
Quicker than the GR Corolla?
On Car and Driver's Lightning Lap the FK8 Type R matched the Focus RS time, with the Mini GP Works just nipping that time. Golf R DSG was only 0.4 slower. All of those required AWD trickery of course while the Civic does the impossible with FWD.
The FL5 may be quicker, however. We should know in a month or two.
You must not have looked at the current lightning lap, which has the Civic Type R limited edition 2021 faster than all of those…by quite a bit. 3 seconds faster to be exact.
But I was only referring to acceleration numbers from a stop, which is where AWD and DSG are best. The GR Corolla is great, but not as fast as the Golf R to 60mph, not as fast as the Civic Type R from a roll, and I am going to guess not as fast around a track as the Type R either. The new Type R may be marginally faster at most, but if so it’s likely down to ungraded tires.
