NHRA Pro Stock Hemi Horsepower
« on: June 16, 2022, 12:06:52 pm »
Interesting post from NHRA Pro Stock racer, Alan Prusiensky.  I can't recall another team posting dyno numbers because they're generally a tightly guarded secret.  However, Alan's naturally-aspirated, fuel-injected, 500 cubic-inch, Dodge Hemi makes 1459 hp @ 10,200 rpm.

Alan's Facebook comment:
"All loaded up and on our way to Bristol. Epping wasn't a bad weekend as everyone knows John won super street. We left Epping running pretty good speed but never really getting a hold of the track. I'm not kidding myself, we are still missing something in our engine program. We're much better but still not where we want to be.  We know where it is but running our engines to 10500 on the dyno is going to cost money and tear up parts not easy for a small team. But our plan after Epping was to do it anyway so we bought a 55 gallon drum of fuel and burnt a lot of it up in 2 weeks. The dyno got a workout. It was pretty easy to improve where we think we needed but Bristol will be the final judge. I know no prostock team will ever show you a Dyno sheet but we will. The first graph is how our engine was falling off after peak HP; not good. The second sheet is what we got now much better but is it enough?"

Super interesting.

Not sure why it's such a secret as I think being able to put the power down (chassis set up) is far more important than outright power.

Also, at the top level teams...I think most guys are pretty close in terms of power they make.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Chassis tuning is a big part of success, but  if other teams are consistently 2 or 3 mph faster at the top end, you'll find yourself losing more often than you win.

Yeah, all that power plays a role at the big end.

At least that's what I've learned through watching Cleetus McFarland progress from a 9  second car to a 6 second car.
