Nice jacket. I'm currently searching for a new leather jacket too.

And for your neck, get a Buff, there are a myriad of designs, I have a few.

yea, never underestimate wind chill on a bike...it's effect is also evident in the 35c summer weather when it's comfortable at speed to ride (but then get killed by the heat when stopped in traffic).

So... at what temp is it a bad idea to ride in terms of tire grip, even of the roads are dry and your gear is keeping all your bits toasty?

Depends on tire, as with cars. Top shelf sport touring tires well into the 40s and lower.

Whereas top shelf sport tires I didn't like them below 50.

I rode my scooter into the 30s.

For me, on a sports bike the limit is about 10C, as it's more like 5C when moving. On the Triumph, 5C. As it has decent grip, and heated grips and seat. Unless it's icy, just keep riding until your attention is more on your hands than the road.

P.S. You'll find that once you solve a clothing problem in one area, another area will suddenly highlight the cold!  :rofl2:

Avoid snow  :D   Only got caught in it once, but had to flag down a pickup and throw my bike inside. Basically felt like a greased road when the temp dropped to a certain point

As mentioned, dirt bikes with studs are very different. One of the guys at work gets more winter hours sometimes on his dirt bike than his snowmobile

Ice racing hand muffs and heated grips and you will be good down to -30C  ;D

I did try  a KX 250 setup for the ice on Sylvan lake way back, my roomate had one.  lots of fun.

Yes it is. Insane grip. Campaigned 2 stroke 500s for many winters. We are looking at campaigning an old KTM 520 4 stroker this winter for at least the Numb Bum.

When we used to bring our bikes to the US, they always tried to DQ us because of our "illegal" studs. They were made by Papco and the heads were taller than what they had in the US.

I've ridden in a hail storm. Did not enjoy!

The coldest I've been was on Vancouver Island. It was rained all day with temperatures around 3-4C. My "rain gear" did not work at all and no wind protection on the bike.

i got caught in a hailstorm once...had to pull over and seek refuge under a tree, which i didn't think was the best option but was the only thing around.

Oh.  Great.  ::)   ;D

I can't see myself riding below 5 to 10C - and it would just be short rides to extend the season and have a bit of fun.  I wouldn't be going so far that if I felt too facking cold, getting home would be a problem.  I do worry about tire grip when it's in that temperature zone, so I am taking corners dead slow.

Even in the coldest weather you're comfortable with, you'll be fine riding "normally" as you point out. It's only when pushed the tires can go away quickly.

Just ride like you would a bicycle and you'll be fine.
