Mechanical Question
« on: June 26, 2021, 03:29:21 pm »
I need to replace the damaged crank case cover on my son's bike, and I have the new part, and the gasket. But there are remnants of the old gasket still on the engine, it is a very thin residue (not sealant), like you can't really feel it at all. Do I need to remove it completely before installing the new one?

If so, how do I remove it without damaging the surface? Or should I just ignore it.

^try some brake cleaner, that usually gets that old residue off. I'd stuff a rag in the openings & spray some on, or spray it on a rag & wipe it off, that way you don't worry about it getting in anywhere it shouldn't be. Another option is a razor blade to scrape it off.

Roloc bristle disks are good for cleaning stuff up, get the lightest grit for aluminum and be careful.

Razor blades work great, but can gouge aluminum if you get too enthusiastic, be careful with those too.

Can’t argue with what’s said above, however that’s gonna seal up fine with a new gasket.

I guess Googone would dissolve it.

Excellent, excellent point!

I have some scrapers that are made of very hard plastic and can be sharpened to a fine edge. They work as a razor blade does but won't mar the surface.

They even sell plastic razor "blades" now.

Especially so with a small bead of sealant.

That will be no problem. Won't leak worse than a new KTM.  ;D
