Summer recommendation
« on: November 24, 2020, 09:40:40 am »
Looking for comment / advice on a summer tire for my 2017 Corolla SE. Size is 205/45-17 and need to replace them in the spring.  Main strong points that I am looking for are good tread wear and performance in the wet. I use separate winter tires (Gislave Nordfrost 100s and they have been great but need a replacement for next winter so that is another post) so performance is snow is not an issue. I have narrowed the choice to General RT43 or Continental DWS06 although Michelin A/S 3+ nearly made the short list.
Comments or suggestions welcome.

Bella has the Conti DWS on her 323i and they've been great. The are quiet enough and provide confident grip as well, and the treadwear has been outstanding thus far. I'd say the A/S 3's would be a little more grippy though, so depending on your driving habits & if you like to take corners at higher speeds, they might be the better option.

interesting tire size...my Rio5 has the same ones...when i bought new tires last year for it, it was between the Michelin's and General Tires you mentioned...the RT43s are very well rated and were less expensive, so i went with them...they are very good tires and i am quite happy with them...as well, if you get caught in some light snow (before you switch the tires over) they are actually quite good, so just a bit of extra there for you in case you need it...you can't likely go wrong with either, but if you're leaning towards the RT43s (assuming they are less expensive), don't worry about them being "cheap crap"...they are a very good tire (General Tire is part of Continental Tire) and i believe most in here strongly recommend them (i was recommended them when i was looking for them).

yeah the DWS are great for 3 season driving, great grip. The Mich AS3+ are considered the best all season you can get, with grip rivalling many dedicated summer tires. You pay for them though.

I have had General AS05s as well, and they perform excellent and wear very well.

Your Rolla doesnt need dedicated summers I don't think, but can recommend Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s if you want a great budget summer only tire.

Between those two, it would be a toss up.

DWS if you like to drive ...er... enthusiastically.

General if you like to save money.

If you would prefer a more comfortable ride,  I like my Pirelli P7's.  They're quiet and smooth but not marshmellows. In a 17" they feel as smooth as my 15" winters.

I have a set of General Altimax RT43's and they work great! They are my second set. So you know, General Tire is made by Continental. Same quality but a little less pricey. With a UTQG of 600 A A you cannot go wrong!

Your tire size should be 215/45R17 not 205/45R17.

me or the OP?

mine are definitely 205s.

EDIT:  just looked up the 2017 Corolla SE and it is indeed the 215/45/17 so you were talking to the OP.
