Mazda CX5 Cylinder deactivation. Is it a bad thing???
« on: September 17, 2022, 10:52:00 am »
Hi. I have been helping a friend choose an SUV. Long story short just steering here towards what I think is a good purchase. The Mazda CX5 is on her short list now. A 2.5 non-turbo version. I know it is a very popular choice on this forum and I love Mazda for their driving experience.

However just yesterday I found out that Mazda engines still use cylinder deactivation technology. I know that that was subject to a recall a few years ago. I thought as a result Mazda removed that from their cars. It seems I am wrong.

This is from a driving.ca article

Mazda Canada has released pricing for the 2023 CX-5, which will start at $30,900 and run to $43,900 when it goes on sale later this summer. The automaker said the five-seater CX-5 is its best-selling vehicle in Canada — it was Canada’s fourth best-selling SUV in the first quarter of 2022.

The price represents an increase of $400 on the base GX trim over 2022, which now gains cylinder deactivation that was previously included only on the trims above it. This fuel-saving technology shuts off some of the engine’s cylinders when full power isn’t needed, such as when cruising at consistent speed.

I was under the impression that cylinder deactivation was problematic not only for Mazda but with many brands. Is this a serious enough problem that she should avoid this purchase?

We had it on a Honda that lasted 240,000 KM before some asshat t-boned it and it was a write off.  Never had an issue with the deactivation at all.

We have Cylinder Deactivation on our CX-5 - I believe ours was the first model year to offer it.  Concerning driveability, I haven't noticed any difference  - you can't tell when it activates or deactivates as there is no indicator light, nor does it seem to have any effect on the way the car 'feels' - no additional vibration, or hesitancy, or any of those other issues that were prevalent on earlier CD engines.  It's basically seamless.

As far as reliability, who the heck knows - it hasn't been out for long enough to be an issue on many Mazda's.

I'm not sure I would worry about it all too much.  It does actually provide a benefit to fuel economy - A 2019 GS with cylinder deactivation is rated a full L/100km better than a GX without CD, and there isn't much evidence of any downsides.  There was one recall a couple of years ago that was fixed with a software update, so that issue has certainly been ironed out of any 2022+ vehicles.

If your friend likes the CX-5, definitely go that route.  It's a fantastic car - as long as they're okay with a smaller backseat and hatch area than the competition.

The complexity is not worth the minuscule savings in gas if you plan on owing after warranty.

GM's two versions of cylinder deactivation has been very problematic.

They advised me they bought one.  White 2021 with only 6000 kms.

They are going to let me try it. I cannot wait. A CX5 may be our next purchase as well if it impresses.

Not if it re-activates them  ;D

Was it a dealer's demo?
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Was it a dealer's demo?

They said it was a one owner off lease. But I am thinking it was most likely a demo. I kept my mouth shut (not easy). Demos make me uneasy as there are multiple drivers who in all likely hood want to goose the thing to see how much power it has.

Very low kms for something put on road 15 month ago.
