Co-worker with Z4 driven only on perfect days and long road trips also has a BMW i3 for the 80% of other days of year, noted that the i3 lease ends soon and is looking at a Tesla Model 3 to replace it as the all weather vehicle.

Z4 sDrive30i does the 0-60 mile-per-hour dash in a quick 5.2 seconds -- 1.3 seconds slower than the M40i

BMW i3 and Tesla Model 3 both retail at ~$50K CDN.  At $66K the AWD Model 3 is 4.7s to 100 km/h, the base is 5.6, much faster than the i3.

The performance Model 3 is 3.2 to 60 mph and is $80K CDN.


Personally, I wouldn't trade away an older 6 cylinder BMW 4 for a newer 4 cylinder model, the older Z4 is a beast.

Having owned screaming 8500 RPM 4 cylinder lowered sedan, V8 muscle car and 6 cylinder 24 valve sedans all with manual transmissions, the driving experience of a performance Tesla feels most similar to the V8 in second gear below 100 km/h and 3rd gear well past highway speed limit, namely, monster torque, head snapping acceleration, all that but with no need to shift to stay in the power band of a gas engine.

I understand why BMW went with a 30 mpg 4 cylinder, but it wouldn't be my choice.

Z4 switched to 4 cyl to get better efficiency but in the bargain lost what was special about the 6 cyl predecessor.
If you want performance and efficiency, switch to electric drive train.

The Z4 still gets the I6.

While the higher-trim Z4 M40i gets a 3.0L inline-six-cylinder engine that churns out 382 hp, and 369 lb-ft of torque from 1,600 rpm

Yes, the sheer driving joy one gets when driving top down in the wind on a sunny day, hearing an electric Tesla motor go bzzzzzzz when you floor it and revving to the  errr.......ummm......
