Has this been published before?  A few years ago, I may have considered buying some of the cars on the list.  But not now, way too old.

Ha, the MazdaSpeed 6 was the first car I thought of when I saw the article title.

Can you really get a Magnum SRT8 for under $10k thought? I've never seen one priced that low. Plenty of RTs to be had for cheap though.

Since when was the Corolla XRS and Vibe GT considered a sleeper?

I don't know.  Maybe because it looks like the regular Vibe, which was quite slower.  But then again, how is that different from a 4 cylinder Camry vs a V6?

Considering a V6 Camry can run 0-60 in the 5's I'd say there is a huge difference.

this is hugely disappointing list.

technically correct terms applied to some on the list (the rest, really.. vibe?)  but very uninspiring.

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

The Camry V6 wasn't always that quick.

And the XRS/Vibe GT were never quick.  :P

They were early 2000s quick (ok sprightly).

It's just that we've been spoiled with manufacturers putting these hi po 3.5 liter engines in everything they can. <--- this "every-man's" horsepower war actually started with the 2002 3.5 Altima.

You 150% completely lost the plot with the bloody Corolla/Matrix.....I would have tossed in the GMs with the supercharged 3.8 V6. With a pulley and tune, 300+ reliable horsepower is easy to get and nothing would :censor: people off then being left for dead by someone in a beige Buick making all kinds of blower whine.

Car and Driver was not impressed by the XRS: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a17011633/2009-toyota-corolla-xrs-road-test-review/

That's a different gen XRS with the 2.5. The one the article is talking about has the Yamaha 1.8 making 180hp, not bad for the time. Hi revving and tough on clutches.

The Rav4 V6 is probably a better example of a Toyota sleeper though

True, I forgot about that. Yeah those 1.8s were actually decent. Same engine as the old Celica GT-S, no?

This list is kinda disappointing...

GM 3.8 SC Buick. Total sleeper.
Saab 9-5 Aero. Highway pull monster. NOBODY expects it at all.
Saab 9-3 Aero 2.8T. Especially in XWD guise, Audi killer.
Speaking of Audi, how about a S4? 4.2 V8 and quite quick. Hey, the list has no rating for reliability so.... ;D
Mentioned the Cobalt SS was supercharged, but neglected to mention that it was later a 2.0T and MUCH faster?
What about the very definition of a sleeper? Turbo Volvo wagon?
Why were these overlooked?

Also a lot of those Japanese cars have no right being on that list whatsoever. Tc?  :rofl2: Vibe?  CSX?  ::)

If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Yeah, some on this list are reasonably nice sport compacts but not exactly what I would call a sleeper.
