Yes, regarding on focusing on your own ride and being consistent, absolutely true. Other riders have to find a way around you (respectfully, within reason). I'm still on my "little" bike when riding at schools and trackdays with the intermediates or advanced riders on bigger bikes and have to keep that in mind !
