The subtext here is that the truly lovely city of Montreal can be positively frigid between December and March, and cars used as taxis will take a lot of crap from drivers and passengersNo-san's bachelor party in February.
^^Fixed.  ;D

It's nice to see investors doing something that benefits society.

So will current taxi drivers protest this upstart's arrival as with Uber?

I didn't even realize that this was a new Taxi company - I thought the 'upstart' was just providing the cars.  Interesting...that'll be good.

...and yes, all should hate Uber.

Wonder how they will manage?

The reason most taxis are Priuss (sp?) is the huge miles they drive everyday.  Electric cars are known for how little they can drive each day.  Multiple cars per driver?

DC Fast charging.  The Tesla's should do just fine.

Why the hate on Uber?  I've used the service twice.  Certainly more cost effective than a taxi service.  IMHO, taxi companies hate it along with municipalities simply because the municipalities make a ton of money off the taxi plates (license to operate a taxi) and the taxi companies are in cahoots together and with the city.  They all charge the same rates.  Not much competition there if you ask me.

I don't hate Uber.  I hate the cartel of taxi license holders who run the scam.  Pay $50 (or whatever) for a taxi license and rent it for thousands upon thousands yearly.  Plus collusion between taxi companies.

It's their fault Uber exists.  So f-them.

No, TEO has regular taxi licences.

That's the gouging the taxi license owners charge.  It costs ~$5K for a license in Toronto.  In turn, these are rented out/sold at about $150K+ a year.

Same sort of deal here in Edmonton.  It's a scam.

Being a Montrealer, I heard an on-air conversation the other day which cemented my thoughts about the corruption in the taxi industry.

The host was interviewing a taxi license holder who is renting out a pair of licenses.  The dude was beside himself in anger because Uber was essentially putting his RETIREMENT POLICY (those two licenses that he's gouging for) in jeopardy.  The host didn't even know what to say.

The protests against Uber and other upstarts (there was even some grumbling about Teo as they're backed by an equity firm that bought new licenses at a huge discount) have nothing to do with the unions.  The drivers and taxi unions are just playing the patsy for folks and shell companies who continually take advantage of desperate individuals by charging obscene amounts of money for these licenses.

Fast charging reduces the life of the battery.  Not a big deal to the average owner who only does it occasionally but it could really be a problem for a taxi.

Why the hate on Uber?
I don't give a rat's as$ about the licencing requirements.

I care a lot about nomenclature usage to side-step regulations set in place for consumer protection.  I've used Uber once and it was the worst 'taxi' experience of my life.  The car was no cleaner, smelled worse, the driver was a hack, and it took me >2 hours to get from YEG to downtown AT NIGHT.

Was he a poor example of Uber?  100%.  Are all drivers like that?  Heck no.  But the fact that he can slip through the cracks is what bugs me.  A lot.  Licences aside, if Uber prescribed completely to all regulations that are in place over taxis, I'd have no reason to hate it.

Until then,

The current system and regulations are completely out of date and based more on back room deals and large donations to politicians then they are on safety or effective business practice.

It would make no sense for Uber to follow these.  Nothing would get better.  In the end a wholesale change is coming in this industry.

It would make no sense for Uber to require background, maintenance, and/or insurance checks?  It would make no sense for each UberX driver to provide proof of commercial insurance as opposed to personal insurance?

Lol.  Simple little rules like the that are not what the taxi industry is worried about and can you imagine the length of the list if you searched for accidents, crimes, fraud, dangerous driving, etc involving taxi drivers.

Not to break into the Uber discussion, but the fleet of vehicles seem like a problem given the Montreal environment:

Leaf and Soul:
Battery Range is short - In the non-climate control seasons best case 200 km of slogging through traffic at low speeds. (more like 150 if you can get up to speed on an expressway)
Winter time much worse, since I don't think a passenger is going to be happy with the heat turned down.  maybe 100 km.
Even with DC fast charge, it's (i seem to recall) 30 min to recharge.  so every 3-4 hours (or less) the taxi is forced out of service for 30 min - not even counting travel time and km back to the Chademo plug.

Tesla Model S
Range should be OK- can probably get through most of a shift and can probably get to a supercharger over lunch
The real concern however is the potholed nasty streets, the cost of bubbled tire sidewalls (and also bent rims) may negate any fuel savings.

I guess the real issue might be when the taxi has some range, but not enough for whatever the person next in the cab requires - A little different scenario than a cab that can take 5 min to get a tank of gas.

I like electrics and may get one for my next car, but they are best suited for planned / expected routes.
