Now that Winnipeg's winters are turning wimpy, Autos should look at getting a journalist based in Halifax to do the testing.  Requirements include the ability to shovel their test fleet out from under 8 feet of snow every morning.

On the tires themselves, Toyos have been good for me but I suspect that there are a good many - maybe 5 or 6 - top tier tires which would have done as well in Haney's test.  That is a good thing.  From his comments, I'd gather that it can't be said the Toyos are the best you can get but buying them you certainly won't be a mistake.  In a crowded field that may be faint praise but good enough to support a buying decision.

Cheers,
John M.

"Now that Winnipeg's winters are turning wimpy..."

Don't tell that to Winnipeggers who experienced their coldest winter in 64 winters last year. Anyway, great review incorporating anecdotal thoughts from the author. Obviously, a thorough, more scientific review may also be helpful at some point. The technology and the aggressiveness of these tires appeals to me. Bottom line, however, remains cost (not in terms of buying snowtires or not, but in terms of comparison). Incidentally, the Manitoba Public Insurance Winter Tires Program is well thought out and potentially helpful to drivers who may otherwise leave themselves, and others, vulnerable on winter roads by not having the appropriate tires for the conditions.

I've always enjoyed your (Haney's ) articles, especially the winter tire ones.  Now with the Golf R, it'll be that much better! !

I find the articles to be somewhat similar, though: either the tire meets his criteria or they don't.  Conclusion reached.  Not a bad thing, but I would like to read about preferences and which tires are better for what conditions (trying to be constructive)

So how do these compare with the Nokian and the Continental?

I just bought a set of 4 Toyo Observe G3-Ice, I'll let you know how they handle in dry conditions vs on snow and ice once they're installed tomorrow!

After my terrible experience with the Toyo Observe G-02 Plus, I will stay away from these. Looks like the tread pattern has improved but the rubber compound was terrible. On the plus side, it wore very well. At the end of the 6th season, it still had 7/32nds of tread remaining. I wore them down for the summer season (still 5/32nds left) and now I'm looking to get new winter tires.
