"Almost a given" Volvo is synonymous with safety testing. As the inventor of seat belts (Nils Bohlin) what else would one expect.

Ford Among others still rely on Volvo for automotive safety testing and engineering.

Surprised nobody, sure, but imagine the headlines if Volvo didn't get the TSP+...

I still think it's bollocks to offer TSP+ on vehicles where the "+" denotes collision avoidance, specifically when the equipment necessary to meet that designation is optional.  I'd like to see safety assistance features as standard in all cars, and make 'em pay for the usual suspects (heated seats, navi, moonroof).  Very unpopular opinion, I'm sure, but again, I don't want auto-braking because I don't know how to drive - I want it because I don't trust others on the road around me to not be on their phones/putting on makeup/slapping their babies/giving roadhead.

I was surprised when I looked at the test details at IIHS that the new XC90 only got an acceptable rating for torso protection in the side impact test. The previous version had a Good rating for every parameter. But overall it is a very safe car. It's interesting to look at the video of the small overlap front crash, the XC90 just deflects off the barrier and continues to slide past it forward. Almost every other vehicle tested this way comes to a violent halt  into the barrier then bounces back. I know I'd rather be in the XC90 in most crashes.
