Volt or Leaf - Who is really saving the world?
« on: December 09, 2015, 01:00:53 pm »

A study reveals that both the Leaf and the Volt are used in very similar ways and driven a similar number of km in electric mode. So, which one should you pick?

I like the Volt, I think its a good looking car and something I could actually see myself driving. Stick some AWD under it and its on the list for me.
Lighten up Francis.....

The new Volt can go quite a bit further on batteries than the previous gen, I've heard about a guy in Qc who managed over 100 km's on the battery alone on the 2016 Volt.

I love the "real car" aspect of the Volt - I can go anywhere that I can with an ICE car.  No range anxiety or charging issues if I'm on a trip.  I also prefer the look of it - though the Leaf has an EV vibe that is cool in it's own way.

I can see myself having the 2016 Volt as my only car. Not so with the Leaf. With a Leaf, out-of-town trips would need careful planning, and the occasional rental of a conventional gasoline car. The Volt is also larger. The Volt's battery is just big enough to still be rechargeable using an existing regular 110-volt outlet. With similar equipment, there is a relatively small price difference between the two.

I agree with everything said, but go a little further:

The icon phase is done.  Now it's time to put the Voltec powertrain in more (and traditional) vehicle models.  I still hold that an Equinox with the Voltec would be a hot seller, and imagine a PHEV Traverse as a large family CUV.

The Prius was (and remains) an icon.  Now the Toyota HSD is found in many more models.  Time for GM to do the same (and not the ELR...come on).

I would go with the volt, you only need one car if you also travel a lot

Trip to visit or pick up my mom in CotU is  300 km, but living in a small town everything is less than 10 km away, no problems in the Volt

Co-worker has had a 2016 Volt for a few weeks. We both agree that it will be interesting once real cold hits to see what impact on range cold weather has. He's in the sweet spot with a 70 km round trip commute. Used 1/3 tank of fuel in 1,200 kms.
Electron use? No idea.

If he could plug in at work he could do his commute on electricity alone in the coldest days; except the Volt start the engine to provide heat below -15C or so.

Is that true even if the HVAC is turned off?

In our RX400h, the engine is turned on to provide heat.  Pressing the "off" button means the engine doesn't turn on for heating purposes.  Heated seats work wonders in that regard :)

Good question, I do not know if you can prevent the engine from coming on at low temp. Still you are going to loose range due to low battery temp. and added wind drag from the denser air.

Such is life in colder climates :'(

I'm reasonably happy with the 25+mpg we've been getting in the RX since we had the brakes done ;D

Well they are getting there, the CUV Bolt.

Tesla Model S is way more desirable.

My wife agrees with you.  Loves her Tesla, and would never consider a smaller vehicle.  She likes big, quick, solid and safe cars with lots of room.
