Car prices in many segments have been static for a long time, or even dropped.  Get in your Delorean and go back to 1998 and a basic C-Class started at $40K and a typical E-Class was $68K.  What are the prices NOW?  The same, or very little more.  The same is mostly true for the family car segment - prices for the entry level have come up a bit, but overall, we're paying the same we have for a long time.

Productivity has been increased dramatically thanks to automation and many makers have moved production to lower wage nations.  Add in platform sharing, driveline sharing, and a lot more attention to things like materials cost (those "hard plastic" interior bits) and that's why prices are the same or marginally higher.

I miss the velour in my dad's 1983 LeSabre.

Okay, fine, someone needs to point out the obvious.  You are misinformed.  That was a picture of the 2005 LeSabre interior.
Wrong.  Look at the steering wheel.  2005 would have buttons and an airbag.  Look at the heater controls too.  And the instrument cluster.

I seriously hope you were joking.  Lol.

Looks nice and comfy.

Whats the extra gauge on the passenger side for?
Analog clock.

I agree about the interior quality being below expectations these days. I recently test drove an Accord and it was very disappointing. The Interior was terrible. So did I buy a Camry? Nope. The best value, quality and drivability for the money these days is the Kia Optima. more HP, drives smooth and glass, the base LX is better equipped then both the Honda and the Toyota and the styling is light years ahead of the other two. Plus, the warranty is so good that it offers a lot of value to me.
Also the interior was voted as one of the ten best recently and that was the 2015 model, not the 2016.

I also recently sat in a Chevy Impala I love the exterior styling, but yuck, the interior was terribly cheap. The best interior below 30 grand to me is the Chrysler 200S, but the car was just a wee bit too small with my growing boys.
I will say though that of the two tested here, I prefer the Camry. Accords are known for tranny issues. Every heard of what Camrys are not for? Exactly, nothing other than reliability.

^ Accords trannies issues have been resolved ages ago.  Your just a little Kia biased aren't you?  Two posts, one saying the Escape is a POS, and this one about the Accord and Camry.......  Is your middle name Troll?

I find the front end of the Camry to be ugly. So ugly, I could not consider ever owning one. The Accord V6 would be the Honda I would buy if an automatic transmission was essential. Since I would want a manual I would purchase the Sport model. My only complaint with that model is the lack of a sunroof but that wouldn't be a deal-breaker. The 2016 Malibu is a better looking vehicle than either the Camry or Accord. I hope it finally will over realistic competition to both of the best sellers.

The Malibu reminds of Microsoft Windows.  Every other generation is a dud.
