Who will buy this?
That's what I don't get.  It's a minivan without any of the practicalities that most minivans offer.  Might as well get a CUV or SUV.

Wouldn't necessarily say that. Its still going to be way more practical than a 3 row SUV and much cheaper. Its just shades of grey. Not every concept has to be taken to an extreme to be viable. Otherwise would there only be M3s and Corollas?

The Sedona still has more 3rd row leg and headroom than almost all SUVs out there.

Kia's target market is the same people who buy the Sienna and the Odyssey.

I don't get all the comments about how this thing is not practical and is too small. Its a fack'n van, how much space do you guys need?

And as an Odyssey owner, I would still buy the Odyssey or Sienna as I value practicality and fuel efficiency, both areas where the Sedona is not nearly as good.

Parents of children are who buy the most minivans.  That high center console prevents parents from going to the back without pulling over to attend to their small children.  You can read more in the member reviews section where I detailed a fair bit from my first hand experience.  The third row definitely is not as spacious in the other minivans.

Fixed?

In all honesty, it's really not a good idea from a safety perspective for a parent to scoot to the back with the vehicle still in motion, although we have done it...

But when you do pull over particularly on the side of the highway, one does not need to exit a vehicle to scoot to the back.

I can see the appeal with the car like dash and centre console arrangement, but I do agree that everything behind that first row is not very well thought out.

Wouldn't it work a lot better for parents of say ~10yr+ old children. Fancier ride, less need to move around to take care of them, they're out of car seats anyways.

Sure you could get a giant SUV but this is much better space per dollar.

Point is a GC, Odyssey and Sienna offer better space (especially in the third row) than the Sedona.

I think the article really hit the point of who the target market should be for the Sedona and I would concur.

And when it comes down to it the Kia will provide greater kit for less money than the Sienna and Odyssey, hence the value equation will still fall in Kia's favour and keep sales rising.
Cheers

Not really. If I want something with automatic climate control, I'm spending $35,795 on the Kia Sedona SX vs. $35,400 for the Honda Odyssey EX vs. $34,300 for the Toyota Sienna LE. Before, it was $40k for the Sedona EX-L to get auto climate control which was ridiculous when the $32k-35k Odyssey EX has had it since 1999.

Sure the new Sedona SX gives me power liftgate which may be a value add for some but to then at the same price do I want a power liftgate in the Sedona or do I want proper removable 2nd row seats and historically better resale values in the Sienna and Odyssey? The value equation isn't there anymore. Kia's banking on their vehicles behind desirable at this point.

But I still hope the Sedona sells well because I think these will be fantastic buys on the used market.

you might still buy one, but not everyone would...the fact this van finished within 1.5 points of the Odyssey and the Sienna in a recent comparison test is proof it is still a very competitive product and worth a look.

it all depends what you consider your priority but there is a lot of value in the Sedona.
leather -  in a 2015 Odyssey you have to get the $42,420 EX-L, where its comes with the 2016 Sedona SX+ at $36,195;
heated seats - standard in a 2016 Sedona LX at $30,195, 2015 Odyssey EX at $34,500 and also the Sedona LX has wiper de-icer which is not available with a Honda.

Heated steering wheel and 2nd row heated seats  - 2016 Sedona SX at $35,795; n/a in the Honda
Fog lights - std on the 2016 Sedona SX;  2015 Honda Touring at $48,410
Power liftgate (as mentioned) - std on the 2016 Sedona SX; 2015 Honda EX-L at $42,410

to match the warranty on the KIA its an additional $1248 on the Honda

Also (and I've noticed this on the whole Honda range), the lack of exterior colour section on the lower models - 2015 Odyssey LX at $30,350 you get a choice of only two colours; on the $27,695 2016 Sedona LX you get a choice of seven colours, however a metallic or pearl paint will cost you an additional $200.  ;D
location:  Prince Edward County, Ontario

Thanks, I didnt want to go through all the configs.  The value is still there just not as blatant as it used to be.  I might also factor the Kia is a completely new design the others are a few years old.

Cheers

Saw my first Sedona in the metal today at St. Clair and Keele.

It kinda looks a little dated from the rear already.

Don't care about leather in a minivan and I ain't getting any minivan that doesn't have power sliding doors and automatic climate control.

The heated steering wheel does sorta intrigue me.
