Triumphs all had mechanical pumps as well with the samr carbs. Biggest problem with that was getting them to start after sitting for awhile, it takes a lot of cranking for those tiny little pumps to fill the fuel bowls enough to feed the carbs. The MG fuel pumps, while failure prone, really helped the starting process, and are really simple to replace/rebuid. If it's not obvious, my preference is for the electric pumps.

Excellent writing and photos

We need an event like this in Ontario

Interesting, I know one of the organizers of the event in the story, Dave Hord.  We rallied similar Audi 90 quattros a few years back.  He gave me a great deal on a stainless muffler.

I've also owned an MG Midget with a troublesome fuel pump, if you didn't hear it thumpetythump when starting you had to reach under the car with something and whack it, then all was well.

^^ sprites  and many Morris Minors were that way...the pump was located just right for a careful kick.

This was a great article, and on roads I have driven many a time.

The one taken on the "wrong" side, 5A at Stump Lake, what were you passing?  One of those pesky 2CV's or Traction-Avant's?  Nice open road ahead of you.  Be assured the rain is not usual at that elevation of the Nicola Valley.

Taken out the back window, actually - I should find out what kind of plastic polish my dad used, as it did a great job on cleaning that back window.
