Bring out the Toyota haters. Honestly we don't know the circumstances. Was he abusing the vehicle? Maybe the car had 400,000km on it. Or he was frequently towing a trailer.

I rented a Mazda 2 through my car co-op with 41,000km on the clock and the transmission sounded terrible and was slipping like no tomorrow. Poor car being in the hands of infrequent drivers who must abuse the hell out of it.

Umm no.  "After purchasing a 2004 Toyota Corolla with 94,700 km on the odometer from a used car dealer in 2011, Mathile Lapointe Saint-Pierre began to experience transmission problems with the used compact."

But I do agree with you on the rest.  We do not know all the issues surrounding it, and it's not like this era Corolla is known for transmission problems.  Far from it.

Actually 2003 and 2004 Corollas had definite gear issues in the manuals which kind of went south at around that mileage.  This most useless article mentioned something about a tensioner. ::) :P

Was this an automatic or manual? There was a recall for all Corollas, Matrixes (Matrices?), and Pontiac Vibes with the 1ZZ-FE engine with manual transmission, I believe 03-04. Something about something getting loose and causing 2nd gear or something to chew itself up.
