I use my phone as GPS and it has voice turn by turn....the phone is connected through my handsfree Bluetooth so it sits in a dash cubby hole.

Sent from my Galaxy S3

Same. No need to view the screen. Everything is voice activated these days.

Direct line of sight, but low so it doesn't obstruct anything but hood.

I am amazed how many drivers I see where the GPS is up high on the windshield and blocking the view ahead.

Mine's a TomTom XL that we were all given at work, it's mounted in a box of crap somewhere in the garage.  It reboots every 15 seconds, even though I've reset it and deleted files and done all the fixes that were on the net.

Sometime in the next month it will be mounted in the dumpster at work.

i hate things blocking my view.
My GPS is on one of those beanbag type things.  Bag on the centre left of the dash at the edge close and away from the windshield.  It remains pretty low and doesn't block any of the road view ahead.   It's very tacky and doesn't slide.  It works well in the Matrix as it has a pretty deep dash.
I've never been fond of having pasted on the windshield itself.

I used it once in the Yaris which didn't work out as well.  I placed it dead in front of me and as close as possible so it didn't block the view.  It's just so strange to have it in front.

So, the TomTom is a DumbDumb?

That was my impression of them way back.  I don't yet have one but should I buy one it will almost certainly be a Garmin.

BTW, I can't view the results, even though I clicked on the "View Results" button.  Can the poll be opened up so that everyone might see?  I view this as good info to be used if I get one.

Garmin is great.

if you register the purchase right away you'll qualify for free lifetime updates.

we really messed that up.  Picked ours up for a 30 days driving trip to and through the rockies.
I only noticed a little while after that I should have signed up and would have gotten free updates.
but instead of buying a new GPS, I purchased a lifetime update package which cost me about $80
I can update 3 times a year for life!

That's what I was hinting at when I started the poll.  I can't count the number of times where I've seen GPSs set up directly in the driver's line of sight to the road.  Common sense does not prevail.

It's expensive at $150, but looks pretty cool.  I don't use GPS navigation enough to justify purchasing one.

Latitude 59W Longitude 73....where no one sees me..... ;) ......damn is that a spy satellite or
a drone... :run: ....never used my GPS on my latest trip..have it in memory from
 my past golfing sortees...

why permanently stick on your dash to obstruct forward vision and distract U from DRIVING

have the navigator brief U on difficult road transitions....that's why they occupy the front passenger seat
if U are flying solo recce the route before proceeding..and use the gps as a last resort :light:
Time is to stop everything happening at once

I kind of doubt that your latitude is 59 west.  North maybe? :)

I have a remote spotlight mounted on the hood of my truck, so I mount the GPS low on the windshield in line with the spotlight which obstructs the view somewhat anyway.  I though about mounting it on the rear-view mirror as I have a windowless cap on the truck, but then I couldn't see to fix my hair... :P  In the car it goes in the cubby in front of the shift knob.  We rarely use it in the car anyway.
