Why did the door protective strip go out of fasion?

and when?

mid 2000's ? 

winko's Chrysler picture reminded me..  i have the plastic strips on both cars in our household and it looks pretty OK to me.

all the new cars seem to be missing them, so why??

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

Dunno. The last two cars never had them. The strips on the 2008 Outback were marked up pretty well by the time we got ride of it. Looks like it saved a lot of dings to the bodywork.
The 2011 already had a number of door dings and we only had it a couple of years.

COST.  Some cars they suit better than others.  Aftermarket offers perfect paint matches.  I hate not having them.

My wife's RAV has them (2012) while the Forester (2009) does not.  AS is right, they suite some cars and not others.
