Could a new RX-7 be in the works? And, if so, could this be its new face?

The RX-8 was a much-publicized test bed for hydrogen, so no surprise there.

The RX-8 was a great car, shame about the engine. When will Mazda learn that the Wankel engine is a POS?

There is a small group of diehard rotary fans that believe, for what reason I dont know, that's its somehow a superior engine.

It's no great trick to get a car to run on hydrogen.  There is just no reason to do it.

It's not a bad engine when you learn the nuances of it and build one right.  The problem is that people don't take the time to learn it's nuances.  Luckily for me, if I was ever to get into a FD3S RX7, there is a local expert who builds them up.  He also races them.

Yeah, "not a bad engine" is about as good as I've heard on its ratings. Shove a turbo four or six.....hell even a high strung V8. The cheapest solution just get some LS3 crate motors and put some Mazda badges on them.

You should try one, it's a sweet little motor.  Super smooth and loves to rev it makes most 4 cyl motors feel like tractor motors.  I just wish they would take better advantage of it's tiny size and put it in an appropriate car.  Something the size of an Elise perhaps.

I've driven a few 2nd and 3rd gens and have never like it. No torque and I was always afraid of them going boom.

Never got to drive a 3rd but really liked the 1st, 2nd and Rx8.  If I worked in Mazda engineering I would likely drop a rotary into a Mazda2 and loan it out to decision makers.  The light weight of the car would make up for the low torque and it would be an absolute hoot to drive.

There is a new Miata in the works that's supposed to be lighter.  If it were up to me I would build the RX7 and the Miata on the same platform.  The RX7 would be the hardtop with rotary and have a curb weight under 2500 lbs.

They are definitely weak on torque.  But in a 3rd gen, modding them with a larger turbo sure makes them fun and quick as hell.  Like I've said before,  I would like to own 2 3rd gens - one to keep rotary, the other with a LS3 twin turbo swap.

Makes me miss my RX-8  :'(

Blasphemy to the non-believers of the rotary engine :P
Love the rev happy engine.

Though I read/heard somewhere that the next RX may be a hybrid/electric.
Electric primary with the rotary as the "extra" range extender like the GM Volt.

The power delivery of the rotary is so linear that I don't mind the lack of torque.
