Test Drive: 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coup
« on: May 30, 2013, 06:28:10 am »

You've probably never seen anything quite like it and it was definitely created to be looked at. A study in contrasts, this urban-coup-country-SUV gives new meaning to crossover.

I personally am a fan of the 4 door, Range Rover / Land Rover reliability aside.

As for this 2 door model, it does look sexy.  Functionality wise, it's an upmarket Juke in my opinion.

Nice write up. I enjoyed the SW theme but thought it petered out near the end...does the Ewok win in the end or does the saga continue?

I'm a big fan of the Evoque. They really nailed the styling, and offering a "coupe" version is cool especially when you consider that the market for two door SUVs is all but gone (is the Wrangler the only one left?).

That said, I do think Land Rover needs to offer a more powerful variant. Around 300 hp would be adequate.

It's kinda strange how the market for 2 door SUV's fell out seeing how popular they used to be. You would think enough 20-30 yr old without kids would be players in that segment, having a sporty 2 dr SUV when I was younger was great. That being said I've only seen one 2 door Evoque here in the trendy Calgary area, and it was driven by a Man in his 50's. It did look sweet.

Great article, as for the vehicle.....  :hurl: Ive seen a few of the 4 door Evoques, what a terrible looking vehicle. The Freelander was bad, this is worse.
Lighten up Francis.....

Engine metrics are mentioned but no mention of how it feels to drive (i.e. get up and go).  That was the one thing I found missing.  It's only touched upon briefly.  Good looking car - but I would take the four door instead - it makes more sense to me.

its a good looking car however...
this is the kinda car rich business men buy for their trophy wives... therefore two doors make perfect sense with a big boot for yorkville shopping trips and they dont need big power stuck in downtown traffic...you cannot get more stereotypical than this car

This colour combo is popular over here, and looks quite nice.

The testers looks a little drab in the silver

Very true -  have always had a soft spot for 2-door SUV's, especially the old Jeep Cherokee 2-doors and the original 70's Range Rovers - shame they didn't continue making either of those. I would love to see what a previous-generation Range Rover would have looked like with just two doors - kind of like an off-road Mercedes CL 8)

As for the Evoque...I'll be diplomatic and say the design is certainly cohesive and I'll give props to LR for taking a risk with it - it's clearly paying off for them, given its apparent popularity.

The thing is, those two door SUVs (Cherokee and Range Rover) were kinda pointless since they were the same size as the four doors. I had a '99 Cherokee two door for a year and it was a pain in the ass not to have four doors.

Worst ever rearward visibility for a non-supercar car?

Did you often have backseat passengers? I figure like a coupe vs. a sedan, the coupe's lesser practicality would not be noticed if you're often just driving by yourself or one other passenger. In my wagon, for instance, I rarely use the backseat for passengers and usually have the seats folded for gear, accessed most often by the tailgate.

Didn't have more than one passenger a whole lot, but had my dog in the back seat frequently enough.

Gotcha - I could see how that would've been a pain without rear doors.
