1928 - 1930 International Six Speed Special grill
« on: April 04, 2020, 01:26:24 pm »

I bought this grill and surround. I believe it is from a 1928 - 1930 International Six Speed Special truck. Needs some work obviously but a neat design. I am going to clean it up. Would love to find an old truck chassis, fabricate a body with this grill. I still have the Austin A40 steering wheel which has a vintage vibe too it as well. Either that or it will be garage art I guess.

This will be an odd show and shine. Who knows where it will go.

But I think I'd like to make it look better.

Before - a bent bit that was annoying me.

Working it with the pliers

After. A bit missing but ok.

Lots and lots of bent fins

Just using a screw driver worked well.

After

I needed this bit off the bottom of the radiator. Figured it would tough so put some penetrating fluid on it.

Came off surprisingly easy.

Looks like it had been repaired a few times over the decades.

I find how things used to done interesting. Shoe lace like thing that would hold the hood off the grill shell. Interesting method.

Bottom mount

The radiator is held in with eight bolts with a flat head screwdriver side and bolt. Tough to get undone after so many years. I had low expectations of getting these off. Lots of penetrating fluid was used.

These were tough to get off considering it is hard to get a good grip on the screw head. I managed to get 6 out of 8 off. Not bad considering how many decades they had been on. The other two had to be cut off.

Freed

Radiator - unfortunately one of the side mounts fell out. I think it was already mostly or fully broken as it was a little loose in there.

Brushing the flaky chrome off I think I will need to repaint this. It needs to stop snowing and being cold here first. Past the point of patina.

On the plus side I was able to hammer out a few dents effectively.

I got this International wheel bearing cap as well from the seller today. Cleaned it up.

Thinking I may make this wheel bearing cap the topper for the grill once it is re-finished.

the patience with those fins is amazing.

love stuff from that generation. I was sad when my dad's old gravity feed gas pump went to a new owner... that stuff just had character in every inch.

Finally got warm enough to do a little painting.

There was an old poorly done repair in the lower left corner which I had to grind down and add a little filler to. Not perfect but I did not want to try re-welding this 90 year grill surrond. Knocked out a pile of dents.

Primer

Ended up more silver than I would have liked but ok

This corner was in rough shape. Worse than the photo shows.

Again not perfect but better.

Came out ok I think.
