A new Canadian record for fuel efficiency was established as the Passat completed the trip with an average fuel consumption of just 5.59 L/100 km.  This resulted in a range of 1,352 km per tank, meaning a grand total of just 4.69 tankfuls.  These totals far exceeded pre-event estimates and resulted in a total fuel cost of just $452.90.

I will say that is quite impressive but what I really want to know is at what speed did they drive? Did this car even see triple digits?

Presumably they'd do even better driving west to east, since they'd have the prevailing wind direction in their favor.
And some cretins think I hate cars.

This says nothing about the Passat - it's all about the record breaking hyper-milers with their 91 records driving all kinds of cars - including

2004
Malaysia Book of Records & Singapore Book of Records National Fuel Economy Records

Lexus RX300, 3 Litre, V6 SUV PetrolAutomatic

Covering 1,025.8 km’s from Singapore to Penang to Kuala Lumpur, 6.88 L/100 km, 14.54 km/L

This story is pretty much irrelevant to most drivers. I'm far more interested in how a car performs in everyday situations driven in a normal manner.....This is really just a PR stunt.

Most people drive without economy in mind.  Real life figures from 12 owners on this site range from 7.7 L per 100   km to 12.5 L per 100 km
