rrocket . I emailed my buddy on this . this is his reply
Quote

sorry
in the U.S. they have a different warranty
it should be 80,000k or 3 years
they have this weird warranty in Canada
because in the States  they wouldn't stand for it

Rrocket this comes from someone who took a 08 Accent in have the belt changed recently . Apparently Canadas belt change time is different from the States . I believe him .
45,000 or 50,000 km change intervals, take your pick .

I can BS.  Not on you...but on the lying dealer.

So are you honestly trying to tell me Hyundai's destined for Canada get a cheaper, less reliable belt than Hyundais in other parts of the world?  Seriously?  BS..and lots of it.

I know I asked the hyundai dealer some time ago on this . I'm pretty certain his answer was 45,000 km . I don't suspect a lie .

I do!!  Read it and weep...Hyundai Canada's maintenance schedule.  See page 4.

1995-2009 Accent.

Timing Belt interval 96,000kms!!  (very reasonable price too, IMO)

I'll bet their answer is " Oh yes,but 45,000kms is our recommended interval. There's no doubt that Hyundai's cars are much better than in the past but many of their dealerships still date from the "sleazy" era. ::)

Well on a simple car like the Accent...it's easy.  But other cars much more involved.  But yea..not all cars are $1500.

Yeah, that's low, but not many cars are more than $500.  The two belt set-up in the Scoob is difficult to do, requiring a lot of labour, and most dealers charge ~$550 for the job.  I just did belts #2 on the Forester, but had a new coolant pump, front main seal, all new pulleys and new tensioner and it was a hair over $1000.

Some cars though they have to remove the water pump to get to it, so they usually replace that too at the same time.

Yeah, my Dad's SO has an Acura TL, and it was ~$600 with the waterpump.  According to Steve, she should have sold the car instead of investing the massive sum required to change the belt.  Other than Subaru, that's one of the more expensive ones I've heard of.

My Lexus GS400 was over $1000 if done at dealer.  Supra wasn't cheap either if done by dealer.

But certainly even if it's $1500 every 100,000kms is not a big deal IMO...

I talked to my Hyundai dealer , started with service .
New guy from g.m. Hyundai trained now said to change the belt on the Accent at 90,000 km . I said I was told 45,000 km a year ago . He said he wasn't there a year ago .
Service manager has been there 4 yrs but is in Edmonton till tomorrow  but will phone me if he checks in with the office today.
Was then told my message would be passed to higher ups . 10 minutes later I was called by
Rick Ellis , advisor . He says he has gone through 6 guys since 09 who didn't work out . Of those 6 he has 2 names that could have told me 45.000 km belt change ,dealer stealers .
He also said belt changes used to be 96,000 km  but Hyundai found they were breaking before then and dropped it to 90,000 km .
I told my buddy that belts had to be changed at 45,000 km a year ago . I think he trusted my info was correct . I'm waiting for him to get back to me again . I asked "Who exactly told you to change the belt at 50,000 km ".

Ouch.  Those prices must have included more parts than just a belt.  On the Subaru, it's such a hassle to get to the front of the engine, I just have them replace everything in there.  Belts, pulleys, tensioner, coolant pump, front main seal, and accessory drive belt.  With new coolant and other stuff, my indie charged me a hair over $1K for the works.  Dealer doesn't charge much more, but my indie uses OE parts for that job.

That's pretty much what "timing belt" service is on some Toyotas/Lexus.  Everything is replaced.

I phoned the Chilliwack Hyundai dealer . They quoted the 96,000 belt change . I told them its been revised to 90,000 km

My buddy made a mistake . He took his car in for its 3 yr service
his response was . Quote
We took the car in as they notified us it was due for its service. I believe it was tbe 3 year 40,000 service.
I dont think they changed the timing belt yet which makes the $500. invoice even worse. When she gets home I'll dig up the invoice & email you what they did & the exact amount.

Spend each day smiling, Tomorrow could be worse. end Quote

SO HYUNDAI DIDN'T SCREW ANYONE accept me , with faulty info of 45,000 belt change .

Here's a simple hint for those who find themselves in this situation: If you don't want to be ripped off with expensive, unneeded 'maintenance' work, find your car's maintenance schedule. It'll be in the glove box along with that other thing you never look at, the owner's manual. Open it and READ IT.  ::) Sheesh....
