What Newspaper's Automotive Section do You Read?
« on: November 27, 2010, 08:03:04 am »
I find the Ottawa Citizen's "Driving" section to be a nice read.  It's got an automotive crossword, a troubleshooting advice column, a couple of road tests and vehicle previews.  Unlike a lot of newspapers, this section is much more than just a bunch of advertising with one or more articles grabbed from the news wires.

The National Post used to have a nice section, but it's really gone downhill.  Even though it shared some articles with the Citizen, being part of the same newspaper group, it had enough original content to be interesting.

I like the regular contributors like David Booth, Graeme Fletcher and Howard Elmer.  I haven't heard much from Robert Botselaar lately which is too bad, since he writes very nicely and has a genuine enthusiasm for the craft.

Both newspapers' automotive sections are on Fridays.

I used to read The Star's Wheels section, back when I subscribed.   Now, I'll read whatever auto section is available on the coffee table of the waiting area I'm sitting in, as infrequently as that may be.

Newspapers, while not dead have really fallen to near the bottom of the list for me as far as auto news.  It's actually sad, I used to look forward to the Saturday Star and then spread it out on the living room floor and spend and hour or two in the Wheels section.  I see a subscription to a newspaper as a waste of money as well as resources.   Times change.

Can you convince my wife that?   I read the Wheels section since she still has a newspaper subscription.

You'll have to tear my real paper Newspaper out of my cold dead fingers.  I read two newspapers on the Internet ( Times and Independent) and the NP in paper as well as the G&M and Star at weekends.     It ain't news until its printed in a daily newspaper... imo

Chicken, the Ottawa citizen use to have its own wheels section, Rob was the Editor but he now is the editor of the lifestyle section I believe, he moved around a lot in the last few years.  They canned the wheels section and copy it from other sources now instead of sourcing their own content and editorial unfortunately.

The Wheels section in our local paper is mostly dealer ads with just a few generic articles from other services or publications...pretty poor.

What's a newspaper?

The car blogs are better for car stuff and the news websites (CBC, BBC, PBS/NPR, Guardian) are more informative than the papers (video coverage etc).

I don't have any print subscriptions anymore.

The free rag we get here three times a week is nothing but ads promoting Chamber of Commerce members in this town with a few local interest stories thrown in. Most of the time I don't bother reading it, including the so-called Automotive section they publish a couple of times a year. We haven't had a real newspaper subscription for over 20 years.

Wife's getting an iPad for Christmas.  Shhh!  Actually thinking of going to an electronic-only subscription to the newspaper as they have an iPad edition.  Hmmmmm.
