Slow Cooker Tips

I bought a 1.5 qt Crock Pot (I'm single - don't need anything larger) and a 1 kg Outside Round Roast.  I've never used one before.  Do you have any tips for me?  When will I know it's done: use a meat thermometer?  This unit has one temperature setting, which is equivalent to the Low setting on other units.
