Surprisingly, most tires in that size are more expensive.

I just have a hard time dropping over a grand on tires for a 17 year old Highlander.
Dude...the tires keep you and your family safe.

$1k is the new normal.

And $2k is the new normal for sports tires.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I get it... If I was for sure keeping it for a while I may feel different

Not that I feel these Kumhos are unsafe, they generally go for just under $200/tire.  So they aren't cheapo Chinese no name tires. I just managed to score a good deal.

No question for your scenario I would be getting the HP71s.

Ya, I'd have no issue with the Kumho's in this scenario.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Right, right.

I forgot about the potential sale of the HL

Yeah, that's the big thing here, it's probably not gonna be around too long. One of my good buddies was always happy with the Kumhos he ran on his Golf back in the day, like 15yrs ago, so I can't imagine they got worse over time.

When our CRV was getting old we slapped on the cheapest set of tires from a known brand we could find.

Worked just fine. I'm big on spending money on winters, but don't find summer driving that demanding, for an SUV anyhow

I'd also say if it's going to be short term, find some used tires.

Or an off brand?

I've been looking for a lightly used set for the last few months, only one good option came up and it sold before I could buy them.

I have a hard time imagining I can do better on a new set vs those Kumhos (which I've already ordered)

You're likely right!

Well let us know how you like them.

Finally got the tires installed.   We're now keeping the Highlander for a little while longer, so I might have gone a different route... But probably not.

I haven't had them on the highway yet, but first impressions are that they are quiet and smooth. Maybe a little more harshness over sharp bumps, but you'd have to be looking to notice.

The steering feels a little heavier, though that might be the alignment.

Anyway, I'm quite happy with them so far. The only real knock against them is tread life, but I do sub 10k/year on the summer tires so I don't really care.

Double check the air pressures if the steering feels that heavy.

I'm sure these will work just fine.

I checked the air pressures, a few PSI high, but nothing major.  I wouldn't be surprised if the alignment was the reason it felt heavier, the toe on one wheel was pretty far out.

Just did an hour of highway driving, happy with them so far.  Quiet, smooth, and handle well.  They are H-Rated, vs the T rating of the Michelins, I think that may help when it's loaded for a camping weekend.

Brand new tires vs worn old tires might make a difference in steering feel?

I'd think so. If anything, the tire compound should be stickier.
