All you need is a map, a 'paper map', you know, the ones we had back in the day...
Yup... I've even got a geography degree to help me navigate. Of course, "back in the day" we also used an abacus to help do math (no computer meltdowns then, eh?); or fed the horses to pull the wagon (no hefty fuel costs); and not pot-holed paved roads to worry about -- just dirt ones. Let's all lament progress here.
You're welcome to stop every ten minutes in a new-to-you, big city and review your map when you're lost (with traffic getting irritated behind you). My time is more valuable than that and I like my GPS unit.

The iPhone is a neat thing -- my brother cracked his a short while ago so he can use skype to call for free in his worldly travels. It's got all those little fancy features and do-dads, but nobody has a lock on the maps themselves like Garmin.
