A new turbocharged engine has improved both performance and fuel economy, reports Editor-in-chief, Greg Wilson, but styling updates to the new Cooper S have "taken some of its cuteness away," he says.

I took a 2007 mini cooper s 6-speed manual without the sports package for a test drive yesterday and was VERY impressed! I was pleasantly surprised to see your review of it up on the sight today.

I think MINI has truly set a new benchmark for small premium vehicles. The interior is now of a very high quality, and from a design standpoint, is very modern. I agree with your comments about the HVAC controls being difficult to operate.

The new turbo engine has transformed the car. The amount of torque at low speeds is immediately noticable! This car PULLS. I disagree with most people and think this newer generation of MINI looks better than the older one. The increased rear seatroom and trunk room is negligable though... barely makes a difference. The salesman told me there was an additional 2 inches in the rear seat, which I dont think anyone would notice.

Aside from minor complaints, this is a very sport fun to drive car that is premium in execution and feel.

The only problem is the premium price! Optioned as I'd like it, it would be hitting $40 000 after tax! ouch....

Just for the heck of it I priced out a new 2007 MX5 GT-PRHT.  Came to around $43,000, including taxes  :o
I think I'll keep my monster. ;)
I have a 2006 MINI Cooper S, and I'm very happy with it.  13,000 km, and zero problems.  The first servicing was a bit of a joke...$235 for oil, an oil filter, cabin filter, and a $23 fuel injector treatment  :P  I didn't wait for the 2007 model because I was concerned about quality issues with a redesigned model.

I love to get one ... you know if it was actually Mini as in small. They seem way too big and loaded with with stuff like push start buttons, dual sunroofs, etc. With a small lighter the turbo wouldn't even be needed.

Something like the old Suzuki Swift GTi/GT with better styling.

I like the new styling - looks much more like a real car rather than a novelty.

As an engineer, I can say it's "typical" that we take a great peice and "improve" it to the point where we slowy, surely remove all the personallity out of it.

We bought our '06 Cooper S Cabrio because the car is special...

I love the fact the supercharger whines like a Tasmanian Devil on a rampage.

And the sound the exhaust makes when you let off the gas in 1st or 2nd as the engine over-runs...wonderful!!
