Nissan may delay achieving sales target due to weak performance
Hiroko Tabuchi / Associated Press

TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Co. said Monday it may have to push back a key sales target it aimed to hit next fiscal year, a blow to Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive who has led Nissan's turnaround.
Nissan, Japan's third-largest automaker, is aiming to sell 4.2 million vehicles globally in the fiscal year ending March 2009 as part of a three-year revival plan.
But weak performance last year, blamed on a dearth of new models in North America and sluggish sales in Japan, may mean it might take longer to meet the target, said a Nissan spokeswoman who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"There's a growing possibility that meeting the target could be delayed by a year," she said, citing company policy.
The spokeswoman declined to offer a new timeframe, saying Ghosn would likely provide additional details when he briefs on Nissan's results later this month.
The company's setback would underscore the difficulties Nissan faces in recovering from a slump last fiscal year. Tokyo-based Nissan slashed its annual profit forecast in February after seeing a 22 percent slump in earnings in the October-December quarter.
The company now projects annual earnings through March to fall to 460 billion, or about $3.8 billion.
The automaker is likely to report its first annual drop in net profit in seven years for the year ended in March on account of sluggish sales in Japan and the U.S -- a stark contrast to rival Toyota Motor Corp., which is expected to report record earnings.
The dire outlook prompted Ghosn, once credited for saving Nissan from bankruptcy, to declare a "performance crisis" at the automaker in February.
Nissan shares, which saw moderate ups and downs in recent months, closed down 0.08 percent at 1,227 yen ($10.31) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Monday.

Nissan engineers told Ghosn they needed 2 additional years before the TITAN would be 100% ready to go.  He ignored them and look at the TITAN today.  It's totally D.O.A.; zero hope for recovery with the new Tundra on the streets.

The guys sucks.  Nissan is about as turned around as it's going to get.

I never understood why they never rolled the XTrail to the U.S.   Yeah, market demograpics, bla bla bla, they still would have sold a shitload.

Too many years with an archaic Sentra, an aging Altima and a Maxima that found too few buyers...
Internal combustion thrust I trust

For the record, Titans are at about as common as Tundras in Southern Oregon, and they far outnumber Frontiers.

Hopefully the new Altima and G35/G37 will help turn things around.  Unfortunately, reviews on the new Sentra and Versa that I've read aren't as promising.

With AWD becoming more popular, Nissan should make the Maxima AWD to boost its perceived value and help differentiate it from the Altima.  In my opinion, that would really help sales of this high-profit-margin car.  It would add less than $1000 of manufacturing costs and several thousand dollars of perceived value, and would give Nissan salespeople an easy answer to the question "why should I consider the Maxima over the Altima?"

Nissan Looks Forward to Better Sales in 2007
By Christie Schweinsberg
WardsAuto.com, Nov 28, 2006 2:42 PM
The No.3 Japanese auto maker hopes redesigned versions of its most popular cars, the Nissan Altima and Infiniti G35, will pull it out of a U.S. sales slump next year.

Not a chance.  Ppl want reliability.  That's what going to kill off the Titan.

Ghosn told NNA to remain “focused on your objectives,” Bradshaw says. ... Meanwhile, sales of Nissan’s Titan fullsize pickup fell 16.2% through October

Nissan's Profits Take a Dive
The Daily Auto Insider
Friday, April 27, 2007

Nissan's profit plunged 54 percent in the January-March quarter. Its net profit for the period totaled 70.6 billion yen ($595 million), down from 152.4 billion yen, The Associated Press reported. Nissan's quarterly sales rose 7 percent to 2.8 trillion yen ($23.6 billion).

It was Nissan's first profit decline since 1999 when Carlos Ghosn was brought in to rescue the Japanese company from the brink of bankruptcy.

Nissan is forecasting profit will grow more than 4 percent to 480 billion yen ($4 billion) in the current fiscal year through March 2008 on 10.3 trillion yen ($87 billion) sales.
