Fuel efficient?  You bet.

Reliable?  Er....ask a VW person.  They aren't rated well, but many swear by them.

I believe the extended warranty will go up to 120k km. The 40k of extended warranty tacks onto the standard 80k km warranty.

I had a 2004 Golf TDI GLS 5-spd, which I traded in for a 2004 Jetta TDI GLS auto and I haven't had any problem in either. I'm now close to 60k on my Jetta (bought it at 36k) and had a burnt headlight, that's it.

I have 295K on my '01 Golf GL TDI manual. Love my car and will more than likely get another Golf TDI or GTI this coming year or next.

HOWEVER, the TDI is not for everyone.

For:
- Long distance commuting
- Highway traveling (excellent torque and quiet response at speed)
- If you value solidity in your vehicle and high perceived quality
- Bigger car features and feel
- Hatchback utility
- Good resale value

Against:
- Many VW dealers have terrible customer service. Depends who you're dealing with
- If you put on few km's a year (under 20K) the TDI engine option is not worthwhile. You will not make up the up-front cost of the engine, and the TDI is not intended for quick 5kms trips here and there. A base gas engine will serve those needs better.
- If your commute is short (under 15K) then it probably doesn't make as much sense as the engine barely warms by then.
- In Winter, the engine will not warm/you cannot defrost windows by letting it idle. It needs to be driven. Therefore, the seat heater Cold Weather Pkg is money well spent and hope the car you're considering has it if you're the type who gets cold easily. Parking in a garage would also be beneficial.

The additional VW CPO warranty is tacked on top of the original warranty, which makes for superb coverage.

No matter, if you're considering purchasing make sure to get the repair records and vehicle history.

On my insight I have now done 157K in 4 years with months of downtime, so i do do alot of driving.

My daily commute to school is about 1.5 hrs round trip, so i do alot of driving. In the summer, my work is not as far away, 15 min one way

The dealership i will be dealing with is Georgetown VW, I havent seen anything bad online, but they are small.

Is 23K a good price for this car? Is their anything specific I should look out for, because it is diesl im not sure how to "Listen" for any problems etc..

Well honestly, if I were you, after having suffered from long periods of downtime with a car and wanted to get a new car that won't give me any troubles for many many years, I don't think I'd look at a VW for now... maybe in 2-3 years, their reliability will creep back up, but for now, they're not a safe choice.

In your situation, I'd buy a new Civic and enjoy many troule-free years of driving. I wouldn't want to get into car troubles with 2 consecutive cars, and any VW isn't a safe bet for not having troubles right now.

Oh, you're the guy with the Insight issues! Now I remember!  :D

Georgetown VW is full of enthusiasts that post and advertise on www.VWVortex.com banners. They're supposed to be a good group of folks. Maybe dealing with the president online or seeing him and mentioning Vortex or CTC.com will help:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerouser?cmd=viewprofile&id=25790
Or the sales guy Jason:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerouser?cmd=viewprofile&id=13508
Who apparently help in threads like this:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=802800

The engine sound should be consistent, that's all. You shouldn't hear belts whistling or anything like that. Just a consistent lumpy idle.

The car is too young to look to see if repairs have been done. Maybe check tire wear to see how it's been driven? That's hard to do though. If it's been sitting make sure the brakes will be okay (they will LOOK rusty, but that will be braked-clean) or that Georgetown will clean them or replace should they warp.

I'm wondering why someone traded the car so soon. It has too many km's to be a Georgetown or VWC demo I'd think.

From what I hear and read Georgetown VW is supposedly one of the best VW dealers around, if not the best in Ontario.  I am actually thinking of driving 1.5 hours to get my 64k service(big service) there just on that fact alone.

Buy a Toyota Corolla and get everything u want in the pkg.
VW isnt the best choice when talking bout reliability.

Actually a Toyota Echo would be his/her best bet, for fuel economy and reliablilty.

The VW is great for fuel economy but reliablity is hit or miss.  For the safest and best bet, I would go with toyota as well.

How about a Honda Insight?  I hear they're GREAT on gas!

 :rofl2:

If reliability is your number one concern, I would also look at Civic, though your Honda view might be tinted at this point.  A Toyota Yaris would be an excellent, fuel efficient choice, though...  or perhaps the Smart would do?
