Snow tires for 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon
« on: October 12, 2005, 08:20:03 am »
Hi all, been awhile since I've chated. Enjoying my new Subaru wagon. Need help on choosing snowtires now. Anyone have experience with Bridgestone Winterforce or Michelin X-Ice. Subaru dealer is recommending either. Any other thoughts? Want excellent tire but must consider keeping cost reasonable. (e.g. 1k$ and under). Also need rims and covers. This is new ground for me so any help is a plus.

You can edit your posts...no need to start a new thread.

Anyhow, I have Winterforce tires on my wife's car.  They have seen 2 winters (10 to 15,000 kms?) and are wearing evenly.  Actually, the degree of wear is better than I expected.  They are quite good in deep snow & slush.  They are adequate on ice, though still far superior to all seasons.  They are a tad noisy at speeds above 100 km/hr.  I can live with a bit of noise for the peace of mind.

For the price, I don't think they can be beat.  I will probably buy a set for my Focus in the next few weeks.

Any snow you put on will be 100x better than the OE tires.  We've run Blizzaks on our Subarus with excellent results.  Our now sold OBWagon loved it's WS-50's and it turned it into a winter demon, eating snow and ice.  Remember that the Legacy wagons are a tad heavy and you will need a good ice tire to keep from missing braking points and watch your braking/following distances.

We're installing WS-50's on the Forester this winter and I have prefect confidence that they will be a good match.

Also, ignore anything your Subaru dealer tells you.  99% of the time they are idiots.  Maybe you're lucky to have one of perhaps a handfull of decent Subie dealers in the nation, but the odds are against it.  You will want to get tire advice from experts like Morty at TireTrends.

Both are great tires. The Winterforce is actually a Firestone. Firestone is owned by Bridgestone. There are so many options to choose from. What type of driving do you do and where are you located?

Here is a link to a number of package options:

Help from you all is always much appreciated. I didn't mean to forget anyone. Life gets hectic looking after an 87 year old Dad in our home so easy for me to forget things.
