Michelin X-Ice vs. Pirelli Winter Carving
« on: October 04, 2005, 09:38:29 pm »
I'm considering putting X-Ice on my new Yaris (when it arrives) but the slightly better price of Winter Carving caught my attention. I guess both are sufficient for my commuting needs in Niagara and occasional excursion to Toronto and economic reason prompts me to consider Winter Carving.

Yet, would Winter Carving be noisier than X-Ice because it is a studdable tire?

Thanks in advance for all advice. :)

Most winter style of tires will be nosier as they have larger Thread blocks which are usually deeper as well. I have both the Michelins and the Pirelli Brand of tires on my 2 cars which are different models but am pleased with them for their long life and service i have had from them. Either one will serve you well.  :)

Noise is relative to your hearing. Many of the newer generation winter tires are much quieter than the luggy beasts of the past, but compared to those quiet touring tires they will be a little noisier. Both the winter carving and X-Ice are very good deep snow and ice tires. X-ice will offer a little better stability, but it is a toss up.

What is a Yaris? (Stupid question?)

You don't get out much, do you?  ;D It's the replacement for the Echo hatch - due to be officially released in 13 days.  ;)

No...I tend to lock myself in a room. Dont venture out much to see the cool things in this world. How about a link to some pics?

There is a LONG thread under new cars about the Yaris.

Thanks a lot, Barrie and Morty.

Since this will be my first car and my first long-term driving winter (ie. counting out the days I'm in rental cars), I'd go with the Michelin. Another BIG reason is the promotional offer of a $50 Michelin gift card.

Anyone knows what is the Michelin gift card good for? Is it only good for future tire purchases or it's a vendor cash coupon that I can use to buy Michelin product? Michelin has a small electric tire pump selling in Canadian Tire for $59.99 and I plan to get that pump when I get my car.

Morty, the Yaris appeals to many who weren't attracted to the Echo Hatchback. You'll see a long thread in the Showroom > New Model board. As well, new info is available from Toyota.ca. Check it out! I'm sure you'll like it too.

Thanks again.

It is a Visa Cash Card, so you should be able to use it anywhere that accepts Visa.

Cash card good for anywhere accepting Visa, that's even better. Thanks, Stemfi

Yes it is a cash card and can be used anywhere you choose. A very good idea and one of the best I have seen so far. We are actually mailing in the card for our customers in order that it has less chance of "getting lost". Program is in effect until October 28 on purchase of 4 Michelin winter tires. This includes <A href="http://www.tiretrends.com/Winter-Tires-Packages.php?tireID=424">X-Ice</A>, <A href="http://www.tiretrends.com/Winter-Tires-Packages.php?tireID=426">Latitude X-Ice</A>, <A href="http://www.tiretrends.com/Winter-Tires-Packages.php?tireID=425">Pilot Alpin 2</A> and the new <A href="http://www.tiretrends.com/Winter-Tires-Packages.php?tireID=532">Latitude Alpin HP</A>.

I've been considering the Pirellis as well. I'll take a closer look at the Michelins if I can get them before the 28th. I've also heard some good things about the Kumho KW11 and KW17, but I don't want to hijack this thread! :) Pretend I didn't say anything... ;)

Can anyone recommend a tire place in the north end of the GTA that has good prices & service? And that carries these lines of course.

Thanks!

-Steve.
