2024 Jaguar F-Type SVR 575
« on: August 01, 2024, 08:40:09 am »
This is not one of my standard reviews, so no links, and no sharp pics - just phone snappers. I had to get experience with this car for a printed project, and the timing worked well to make the F-Type my '24 "b-day week booking". But FBC's being FBC's, it stayed in the shop for months due to "brake issues" and "parts delays". By the time the car came back in fleet, its cancellation for next year was confirmed, its pages deleted from the book. So there was no purpose for me to take it out for a week. But who needs a purpose to drive a Jaaaag?

Nice. I love the look of these. I know they are not supposed to be that great but I'd still own one.

There's a (rare) manual one on BaT right now: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2017-jaguar-f-type-s-coupe-2-2/

Design

The F-Type Coupe is easily the best-looking Jaguar of the last decade. By far the best tribute so far to the legendary E-Type, the rear in particular withn its wide hips, exquisite taillights and wide tires. The mid-cycle refresh up front always left me ambiguous - in grey like my tester, it looks a bit generic. Where's the drama? Despite its nice behind, my tester's grey renders the thing a bit too subtle, almost invisible, especially under the grime of rainy days.

Interior

The F-Type's interior shows the design's age, but it's still a nice place to do business. And it means business, as this is a snug cockpit - not all physiques will fit. My lanky frame got in race-car mode, arms close to the chest and bend down backwards / drop in. The IP layout looks a bit awkawrd in pictures, but once seated everything is where you want it to be. The seats are firm, but very well contoured and supportive. No need for a massage feature here - the burbling V8 resonates right up your spine while sitting in traffic, a smirk forming at the thought of what will happen once the roads open up.

Power

In case you didn't know, the "575" in the car's name refers to the hp figure. This is the most powerful vehicle I've ever driven, and thank God for awd, saving the happy souls at the wheel from YouTube moments. F-Types, no matter the engine, have always been loud, and there's a button on the console that bypasses some of the chambers in the mufflers. It's the first thing I pressed everytime I started the car. Sport mode enhances the soundtrack even more. Flooring the throttle fills your senses with a glorious roar from the wide open organ pipes at the back, clearly coming in through the hatch area. There's fast, and there's FAST. Yes, most 911's are faster than this, but it's like arguing over which fighter jet pulls the most g's. But plopping a 575 hp supercharged V8 in a small car like this makes public roads confining, like a leash preventing your access to freedom. Might be a good thing, as I felt the car slide a bit at 170. Wake-up call bp, hold your British horses.

Driving

One of the tires was misbalanced, which spoiled the experience a bit, but still this thing felt pretty much glued to the road at legal speeds. The conventional 8-speed automatic is a gem, barking upshifts and popping downshifts at will, sensing what you're doing and what you want. This is the closest experience to a stick I've ever felt with two pedals. Most surprising was how composed the car was despite its paper-thin 30 series (!) tires. Make no mistakes, it dfoes shake you up, but less than, say, a WRX RS. Iron fist in fine leather glove, veddy veddy British.

Value

For the performance level and cachet this thing has, it's a steal. Even more so as a used car - it won't be as trusty as a Camry, of course, but the F-Type is a bargain (used) supercar IMHO. Be ready for steep depreciation if bought new, but you'll be enjoying that red ink one lauch control launch after another. Awd makes it winter-friendly, and as a hatchback you can even take it out for a Costco run. Despite, ahem, my thorough evaluation of the F-Type's performance enveloppe, I averaged 12.5 l/100 km over my week with it. 92$'s worth of premium mood therapy, no couch needed.

Stunningly beautiful machines.

Seems like a good candidate for those retired boomers who sell their house in Toronto/Vancouver and move somewhere cheaper with nice open roads. As long at they can get in and out of it, anyway

Final Thoughts

As Jaguar put it themselves on their website, this is the brand's last, final, ultimate internal combustion sports car  :'(. Only the F-Pace survives into 2025, the rest of the line-up is cancelled, including this big kitty. 10 years is long time to let a model linger in the marketplace, but while dated a bit, today we can all appreciate how pure and, dare I say, analog this car is. Unlike most high-end cars, the F-Type is get-in-and-go, with simpler interfaces, tons of power and fine smelling leather. Useless gadgets typical of the premium world are limited to motorized vents that pop out of the dash, but a kick-ass high end stereo is there should you tire of listening to the V8. I did not, and for once mostly drove with the Meridian turned off, taking in all the sound and fury of that wonderful animal living its last days under that bonnet.

What a fantastic looking car. I always wondered why the F type was never popular, they are rare as hens teeth around these parts.
Lighten up Francis.....

I see the 'verts every now and then, but the Coupe is tons sexier - and indeed quite rare.

Definitely a great looking car, but I disagree on it being the best E-type tribute; the e-type, for it's time, was a big car. I have some photos of the ones we've had over the years parked next to various MGs and an e-type looks huge compared to an MG or similar of the time. IMO, the X100 XK8/R was the closest thing we got to a modern e-type from a styling and market positioning standpoint. While Jag toted the F-Type as the replacement for the XK, it simply wasn't, the XK was a grand tourer, and the F-type is more of a pure sports car.....Think Mercedes SL vs. SLK. As a bit of a traditional Jag guy, I would (and did) choose a late X150 XK/XKR over an F-type, as it's a much more elegant and substantial car and feels more like a proper Jag.

That said, regardless of the history, the F-type is still a phenomenal car and that supercharged 5.0L is an absolute gem that will do doubt go down as one of the last great modern performance V8s. Take advantage of the depreciation while you can and grab one.
