that's not "new and upcoming" though...it's just a rendering by a fan.

Would love to see it happen, but I doubt it will come to existence.  Look how long it took them to make the GT86, it was like 5 years before it actually came out, and even then it was likely only because Subaru pushed them over the finish line.  Toyota is too busy building CUV's and electric/hybrid products.

Well sh!t, that just sucks.  A friend sent it to me today and I just went through it briefly.......didn't know it wasn't really happening.  Too bad, that rendering looks bad @ss!!

Considering the Lotus has a Toyota engine and is mid engined I think that's a great compromise.  Just too bad they are so much more than what a modern MR2 would likely cost (less than Supra, more than GT86),

True. Still though, I think used, base engined ones (276 HP) go for about 60K. Yes, it has the engine and transmission sourced from Toyota. Not sure how reliable the other parts are though, probably just minor electrical issues to worry about.

Could we be getting something truly special from Toyota with the next MR2?  Man I hope this is true and it ends up happening and with an ICE engine (hoping for a manual might be asking too much).

The article speaks to Lotus supplying Toyota with the drivetrain. I would think Toyota would supply that themselves if this goes ahead.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Yeah I didn't understand that.  I figured Lotus would do the platform and suspension and Toyota would be powertrain and styling.

same...i remember some Isuzu cars in the late 80s that had "Tuning by Lotus" on them as Isuzu contracted Lotus Engineering to tune the chassis/suspension on them.

Now that is a design. Lots of greenhouse and a simple, functional interior.
