Falken Wildpeak A/T3W brown sidewall
« on: October 28, 2019, 12:15:47 am »
I have been running Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires on my 2016 Tacoma for the past 6 months.  I like the tire, but the sidewalls have turned brown and I can't get it off.

At first I noticed it after I washed the tires and applied Meguiar's Hot Shine, then went for a ride down a dirt road.  The product seemed to attract a lot of dirt but after washing the tires many times (this was several months ago now) the brown persists.

Then I read about tire blooming.  I suppose it could be this, but the sidewalls are very brown and it won't come off like blooming is supposed to.  I've tried washing the sidewalls with dishsoap and water, citrus degreaser and car wash liquid.  When I use the citrus degreaser, it turns very discoloured so I think it's getting the brown off, but then when the tire dries it turns brown again.

I've tried attaching a picture of my tire, after washing it thoroughly today with citrus degreaser and a brush.

Any suggestions?

a quick google search pulled up this:

Yes thanks I saw that post. My issue is that I've tried cleaning the tires many times and the brown stuff doesn't seem to come off.  Maybe the citrus degreaser is not the right product?

First, I assume you want the tires to look black, but don't want the tires to be prematurely cracked - hence the dilemma - because you could always use solvent to wash the bloom off, but you would also be cleaning off the ozone protection.

My suggestion is to use a tire dressing that includes AO's (antioxidants and antioxidants).  Michelin produces such a thing,   There are likely others - read the list of ingredients.

Those will disguise the color, while keeping the protection.

Castrol Super Clean. Spray on the tires, scrub, rinse, repeat if necessary. Sidewalls will be nice and black!

Drive through mud and make the truck match?

It's a tire on a truck. I like Johns suggestion.

Oh and tire dressing: Not even once.  ;)

I like using Westleys Bleche-White and a scrub brush. All the dirt and mud will come off very easily, and makes my falken tires black again.

I ended up using Super Clean and a scrub brush and it worked well, although it took three applications to get it fully clean.
