Yeah, they shared a lot of product development in those days. It was not long after that the Escort was changed to the Mazda Protege platform in NA. They had already been platform sharing for the Probe/MX-6 and Ranger/B-Series

Was this the era when Ford owned Mazda?

Ford never technically "owned" Mazda. They bought a quarter of the company in the 70s and then owned one third of Mazda as of 1995. But I think under Japanese law that meant Ford was the controlling shareholder.

Auto marketers use the word 'coupe' as a synonym to 'sporty'. That's why these crossovers are being called 'coupes'. Honestly, I don't mind them as much as some people. I just think of them as slightly bigger hatchbacks for the people who think a hatchback is too small.

I should go see exactly how much trunk space you give up with the coupe version of these SUVs.  I mean, the only reason I'd be driving an X4 over a 3-series would be to lug the kid's crap....so wouldn't I just want an X3?
