Interesting, but that's about it.

In the 1980s cars from the 1960s were cool because they cranked out so much more hp that anything new.

In a land of 300hp 'mini' vans, and 700hp pony cars, old cars just seem....old.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Now its a matter of looks. In the land of blobs of CUVs and beige Toyota a late 60s Chevelle and split bumper Camaros are beautiful compared to the cookie cutter crap of today.

There's a lot to be said for that.

The early third gen F-bodies do look pretty good to me, later ones with the obviously afterthought scoops and such, not so much.

Plus, Knight Rider.  ;D

I had a couple of friends with F-bodies. One was a late 1970s Firebird 400 and the other was an 83 or so Camaro with the 2.8l and manual. They were good fellows, but the cars were crap to drive, obviously.

There were a lot of IROCs rolling around in those days.

Everyone here knows I love these, and I'd really REALLY like to add a Players car like this to the stable some day. My dad worked for ESSO, who was a big sponsor of the Players race series, and my dad being a bit of a Camaro fan (he was driving the 84 that's now mine at the time) got access to tickets, memorabilia, etc. I loved watching those races as a kid, and I still have a bunch of the memorabilia.

Course another big sponsor was Canadian Tire, and as a result I've been able to locate and acquire some more memorabilia from the Canadian Tire racing team.

I also think the cars get a bad rep because they did often fall into misguided hands....whether it was just douche bag owners who drove them into the ground, or owners who made modifications in the name of speed only to make the cars that much worse.

A stock, well-sorted F-body (3rd or 4th gen at least), while not terribly fast, is a great car...decent handlers, comfortable highway cruisers, astonishingly reliable, and even reasonably practical as a DD. I don't drive my cars a ton anymore, for work and family reasons, but I've logged hundreds of thousands of kms in f-bodies in the last 15 years and enjoyed them immensely.....Anyone here who thinks they're all junky rattletraps is more than welcome to come drive one of my properly-sorted cars.

Funny you say that... IROC is also a not-very-nice acronym about that specific group...

No Offense to anyone:

Italian Reject Out Cruising.  I think it's only applicable if they're driving IROC's.

I used to handle the printing of the GM Player's Challenge Cup newsletter for Lamont Advertising. (Anyone here know Phil Lamont? Competed in VARAC racing for decades.) That series was very competitive. I could be tempted by a car like this.

That's a shame. The original IROC series, i.e. International Race Of Champions, was fascinating because it included racers from different genres. It was unique worldwide at the time.

When I knew it in high school, the ‘R’ part was a little less politically correct, if you know what I mean.  ;)

I wanted one of these so bad. Still kind of do, but I’ll pass on all those Player’s Cup stickers, thanks. Make mine an ‘87 with the 305 and a stick, in that deep blue colour.

A guy I knew in high school saved up from his summer job and bought a new Camaro. We were all excited until we found out he could only afford the 4-banger. Yep, he bought a new Camaro with that 86 HP iron lump.  :rofl2: Still, it had a stick and I’m sure was at least somewhat fun to drive. Hey, everything is fun to drive when you’re sixteen!

GM actually made a whole bunch of Camaros that were good cars if you looked past the pathetic engines.

The basic chassis’ have amazing potential. They can be easily built into damned fast cars, and not just straight line machines.
