Tire marketplace changing?
« on: February 12, 2019, 07:32:36 pm »
I have been trying to find some Michelin Defender LTX 255/50-20 for the Land Rover. My usual go to (Costco Canada) shows national back order. The USA Costco site also shows a back order. I online chat with Michelin.ca and they confirm the back order with no estimated production date. Michelin USA had tires available and sells directly to consumer from Michelin USA site. Do you think they are slowly trying to squeeze retailers and take sales directly?

How does Michelin selling direct in the US, but being backordered in Canada, help you as a Canadian?  It just sounds like they don't want to sell any tires up here.

Costco USA is saying backardered too. I think the supply is low and Michelin is keeping to itself

Small market thing in guessing.

We had a family friend that has a tire store. I'd always ask for a quote. It was almost always cheaper to buy in the US...by hundreds.

And he claimed (whether true or not) the price I was getting in the US for tires was cheaper than his cost.

Thanks that is the best quote so far I have had from a smaller local shop. MAny of the shops have very similar sites. Most of the time I try to order and I get the message back that they are back ordered. If they raincheck at that price I am happy.

Update: Just notice the original quote was for 255/55-20.  I need 255/50-20 and they are more.

$1677 out the door... :(

Sorry about the screw up with sizing

I have Defenders on the pickup and RX
I use them all year round and they handle ice and snow pretty good

Tirecraft advantage program is not to bad, include rotation and fixing flats

Yes. Your particular situation could be compounded by some supply issue on this particular item, but there is an emerging trend.

Got curious and checked it out here at CT....We're $1,367.96  for the set and while not stocked in many stores it looks like it's order able still.

I wonder if more of a Costco thing because Costco hasn't had Defenders in stock since last September , I was looking for the RX,
All the other dealers I tried could get the Defenders in a couple of days

about a year and half ago Costco had a clone tire (Costco exclusive ) as the LTX X which was nothing but the Defender. These then disappeared and the Defender showed up again and I snagged some for the Ridgeline.

Will the 255/55-20 fit? Yes probably but I'll have to look into the reduction of gearing and driveability. Gives me a little more sidewall.

Just checked 1010 Tires.  Yikes, that is one expensive tire!  :o

$356.20 each or $1424.80 for 4.  (+ shipping)

I have no idea who buys tires from 1010 tires.  They always have higher prices than anyone else.
