IIRC that was a convertible conversion done for Toyota by American Sunroof Corporation (ASC). Even with the added bracing, the chassis was pretty "willowy".

Not many still around.

They were a pretty bad convertible from what I recall.  I absolutely loved my 88 Celica GT with the trunk not hatchback, white with blue velour interior and even complete with rear window louvers!  Sadly I was right in the middle of a multi car pile up and that was the end of that

I like convertibles, I like this generation of Celica. The combination of both is somehow less than the sum of the parts.

I agree with you and am a huge convertible fan, but test driving the Celica changed that for me, and I almost fell for it again a couple more times with the 300ZX and RX7 converts...it becomes very apparent that chopping the top was an after thought and really killed the driving experience.  I was so on the fence with all 3 of them because I loved the looks and wanted it to work, but it just didn't for me.  Too much cowl shake, buffeting and rattling to enjoy it, and the top`s designs seemed questionable at best

oh shoot, just remembered to add a convert 240SX to that list of another I almost bought!

I learned to drive on an '82 GT with a stick!  In a horrible shade of brown, just like this one:

I almost bought a 79 about eight years ago. Stupid emissions testing stopped me from doing so.  :'(

this thread brings back memories of when I used to sell Toyota's in the mid-seventies.  Here is a new '78 Celica GT that just arrived at the dealership
location:  Prince Edward County, Ontario

These are pretty rare with a stick, and bonus points for the black interior too! Price seems fair.

Two corrections: this gen came up for model year 1986, '85 was still the boxy rwd generation. Also, the GT made 115 hp, the GT-S 135, so 125 is a typo / error.

My first "real" car was a 1986 GT liftback, with the one-yr only 8 valve 97 hp 2 litre four, white with blue velour interior. Loved that car, bought it in 1989 and sold it when I got my first new car in 1995. I still have its Tamiya GT-S "mini-me".

My favorite was the 3rd gen... especially the "Celica Supra", before the Supra went on it's own
