Crowsnest Pass, Waterton ride
« on: May 12, 2018, 01:13:32 am »

A lovely Sunday ride. Tempatures were 10-20C with very little wind. Perfect. Distance is not accurate is it misses about 50 kms at the end. There were a few other small detours as well. But rough idea.

Starting off with a fill up in near by Fort MacLeod. My riding partner was also riding a Suzuki but his a just a tad bigger ...

The first real stop is at a river stop along a secondary road.

My little one cylinder running well.

Next we came across some classic cars in Cowley.

A 1950 Dodge DeLuxe fastback and 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne. The Dodge is a Canadian market example.

1958 Chevrolet Biscayne sedan

Lundbreck Falls at the foot of the Rocky Mountains

Lots of water this time of year

Turtle mountain - Over 82 million tonnes of rock came off this mountain in 1903 burying the town of Frank.

A light bit of off roading led us to an abandoned mining building.

We picked up for food at a local grocery store for lunch.

Coke ovens once used in coal mining.

My riding partner had a trailer near by so we stopped

The hamburger was better than the photo displays we made from fresh buns, cheese and never frozen 1/2lb patties.

A little dusty after some gravel roads

Out of the mountains a bit to the hamlet of Twin Butte. Restaurant and general store.

The restaurant and general store of Twin Butte, Alberta is a popular stop for folks on motorcycles.

BMW K1300, Harley Davidson (I think), Suzuki, Suzuki TU250X

Stopped for a refreshment

Mustang meeting of some kind? They left before I could find out.

On the move again. South towards Waterton. There is buffalo down in the valley although they are rare to actually see.

At the gate to Waterton National Park

Other bikes coming through

Prince of Wales Hotel located in the  Waterton Lakes National Park on a hill over looking the town site. Built in 1926/1927.

The town site is visible below. An eagle can also be seen near the center of the photo.

Another shot of the hotel.

I lost one of the handle bar weights early in the ride. Ugh.

Down in the town site. A little snow still.

Cameron Falls

Some folks throwing snowballs with some left over snow.

More motorbikes

Managed to grab a bite to eat in Cardston, Alberta. It is a mostly Mormon town so not much open on a Sunday. We had about just over an hour to ride back through prairie.

Fantastic trip and pics!  Reminds me that I'm overdue for a day trip.

Nice! That is interesting motorcycle country with the mountains close by, once you get used to the wind.

Funny seeing Mennonites on a day out, not nearly as many of them up here in the center of the province. Lunch at the bakery in Bow Island was one of the highlights of my days on the road

Mennonites? Did you mean Mormons? Central Alberta is full of Mennonites (and Hutterites).

Very cool! Makes me almost wonder if I'm moving to the wrong side of Alberta. Not too far away thoguh.

They're likely Hutterites who tend to somewhat wander out in modern society, driving cars, having cell phones, heck I saw a family in Alberta going to McDonald's to eat which shocked me the most. Mormons do not dress traditionally at all, Mennonites are about half/half. I worked with one at a previous engineering firm. I believe Amish religion is closest to conservative Mennonite who, unlike Hutterites, mostly stick among themselves with little to no access to modern technology although I know some Amish communities are starting to embrace some technology.

All kinds of Mennonites. Of the obvious, bonnet and dress types there (seems to me anyway) is way less in the centre of the province than the south, who got a ton out of Mexico the last few years. Lots of work in agriculture and food processing south of the #1

Thanks all. This was a practice day trip for a much longer one at the end of June.

As far as Mormons go they don't have conservative dress so it would be hard to pick one out just from looking at them.

Lots of Hutterites around here. They often go on trips together in a 15 passenger vans.

We'll be traveling Highway 3 and the Crowsnest Pass this summer when we drive from Radium Springs to Medicine Hat.  We won't have time to stop anywhere, as we'll be doing a 10 hour drive from Radium to Saskatchewan Landing, but it will be nice to see the views from our windshield.

You should stop at the World's Largest Truck - 1973 Terex Titan 33-19 dump truck

Frank's Slide.

They are both right on the highway and could be combined with bathroom breaks.

You will likely drive by Lethbridge's High Level Bridge - it is bridge is the largest railway structure in Canada and the largest viaduct in the world.

If we see something on the side of the road, we will definitely stop for a few minutes.  We can't afford the time to make any detours, however.

I've read up on Franks' Slide in the past, and consider it interesting enough to make a stop.  Thanks for the Heads Up.

I love the look of that old bike, so classic. High level bridge? It would be awesome to ride it...
