Reading Carproof.

I'm not sure if there was a thread before about this of if it's the right place but i'll start one here for now.  I'm sure other coulds benefit from this info.

I was looking at a bunch on carproof on kijiji and I notice lots of them has a ton of "service record".  Are these the actual amount of time and date the car was brought to the dealer?  Some seams very high frequency, like every couple weeks.

Example:

04/20/2012
Alberta, CanadaMotor Vehicle Dept.Previous UseLease

07/13/2012
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Toyota
Service Record
10,509 KM

10/26/2012
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Toyota
Service Record
19,491 KM

03/08/2013
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Toyota
Service Record
27,251 KM

04/02/2013
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Toyota
Service Record
29,506 KM

04/27/2013
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Toyota
Service Record
31,020 KM

06/22/2013

Toyota
Service Record
36,613 KM

The oil changes are likely the 10k ones.

And the others are likely to fix some item....often something is uncovered during the inspection during the oil change...then a subsequent appointment is scheduled to do the fix.

Doesn't the dealer have the history for you to review?

I asked. He said they are not allowed to provide vehicle history due to privacy laws. I’ll ask again

Once you own the car, you can request all the records you want.

There's also things like tire switch overs, and so on.  My Highlander had a long, long list of things, nothing of concern.  The owner had something done, then a month later had the tires switched, then a few weeks later had a windshield installed, and on and on like that.

Carfax is not great for determining service history.  The value in it is the geographical locations and stolen history, and so on.

Tell him to print the history but cut out the owners name.

Sometimes they'll do it.

Good point.  I guess I'm so used to do everything myself I often don't see the other side as people bring their car in for everything.  As geographical location I think it's the best,  all at the same dealer and also traded in there at the end.  hopefully he wasn't around during the flood ;) haha

That’s a problematic car right there...seems like the headache started in March/2013 and many visits happened after that...

Can't say for sure until you get a hold of that service record, but I'd be concerned about those frequent visits, too.
