Completely redesigned in 2010, the current version of the Cadillac SRX is a totally different kind of SUV compared to its first incarnation, sold from 2004 to 2009. The new design is much smaller and more car-like than the previous model; to some this is a huge disappointment while to others, the SRX now offers what they wanted from Cadillac, which is a mid-sized crossover rather than a truck-like vehicle.

For 2012 Cadillac has dropped the previously offered 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 from the lineup, and has upgraded the 3.0-litre V6 to a more powerful 3.6-litre engine that is standard on all SRX models.

Aimed squarely at the Lexus RX350, Cadillac now claims more horsepower than the Lexus as well as more torque. SRX sales rose a whopping 195 percent last year, solidifying GM’s decision to scrap the old design and use this crossover-based platform.

Other enhancements for the 2012 year include standard Bluetooth phone connectivity on all models, a heated steering wheel on Luxury, Luxury and Performance and Premium trim levels and door lock switches on the driver and passenger door panels. Also available on the 2012 model are new machined-face finish 20-inch wheels which are standard on Luxury and Performance and Premium trim levels.

Available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, my tester is an AWD Premium model which, as one would expect, is loaded with all of the goodies including power liftgate, UltraView sunroof (which covers 70 percent of the roof area), Bose 10-speaker stereo system, HID headlamps, LED taillamps, rain sensing wipers, push button start, heated and cooled front seats and much more.
