Land Rover announces prices for new diesel models

In March, Land Rover Canada told us it planned to bring a diesel-powered version of its Range Rover Sport model to Canada, and today it confirmed that by attaching a price tag to that option in both the Range Rover Sport and the posher Range Rover model.

In the Range Rover Sport HSE Td6, the 3.0L turbodiesel V6 will sell for $82,990, a $1,500 premium over the HSE with the standard 3.0L supercharged gas six-cylinder; the Range Rover Sport line starts at $75,990 in SE trim.

Diesel power becomes the entry-level power source in the Range Rover, where it commands $108,490 in the HSE Td6 model, making it the only Rangie not to use the brand’s 5.0L supercharged V8. The next step up the line is the Supercharged trim, priced at $116,490.

As mentioned, the diesel is a 3.0L turbo, and it makes 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque; Land Rover says those figures allow the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to maintain their 3500-kg (7716 lbs) tow rating, and deliver acceleration times “comparable” to the supercharged V6 with its 340 hp/332 lb-ft ratings.

These two oil-burning Land Rovers become two of the priciest diesel models available in Canada: a Porsche Cayenne Diesel starts at $72,000, BMW’s X5 xDrive35d pricing begins at $67,000, and Benz’s new GLE 350d (nee ML-Class) is a relative bargain at $63,200, while Audi’s current Q7 (a redesigned version is due out soon) is a $64,200 truck. Outside of luxury nameplates, Jeep puts a diesel in its Grand Cherokee Overland model for about $65,000, and the VW Touareg, can be had with diesel power for $54,000.
