General Motors has recalled its new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups and some older Malibu sedans to correct potential flaws with seats and seatbelts.
In nearly 5,000 of the company’s new mid-size pickups, seat frames may not have been properly secured to the trucks’ floor. Transport Canada says these trucks don’t meet the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for “anchorage of seats,” which is a bureaucratic way of saying “your seat might go flying with you in it in the event of a crash.”
GM dealers are being instructed to inspect seat frames and disassemble and properly reassemble the seat in affected trucks.
The second GM recall involves about 18,500 Malibu sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years. In these cars, a steel cable that anchors the front seatbelts to the car’s frame can fatigue over time and fail, “increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” says Captain Obvi… er, Transport Canada.
In this case, GM dealers are to relocate the belt tensioner and replace the faulty parts.
