Rumours concerning the next-generation (tenth!) Honda Civic were confirmed at the 2015 New York International Auto Show today. Yes, there will be a five-door hatch for the North American market and yes, there will be a direct-injected and turbocharged engine (1.5L VTEC Turbo) available for certain models. A teaser was the reveal of the latest Coupe Concept, which looks to be a near production example from a styling perspective at least (barring the mirrors and likely the lights). The all-new sedan is set for release this fall, followed by the Coupe and the hatch. A new Civic Si and Type R are also scheduled for release.

“The new Civic will be, flat out, the most dynamic, the most technologically advanced and the most refined and stylish Civic we’ve ever made,” said Dave Gardner, senior vice president of operations, Honda Canada Inc.

The Coupe Concept features a longer wheelbase than the outgoing model and a lower, wider stance. One can expect the wheelbase will be common to all Civic models.

The new Civic will be fitted with the latest driver assistance technology, including Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control and Honda LaneWatch, along with Honda’s next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure. This is the first time that development of both the sedan and the coupe has been led by a North American design team.

Present at New York and describing the Coupe Concept, its designer Guy Melville-Brown indicated that the next-generation Civic will be, “a real gamechanger.” So far, it looks promising indeed, although the last time Honda released an all-new Civic, the finished product disappointed, causing Honda to make quick modifications to address some of the complaints.

This time, Honda looks to be on track for an exciting vehicle that could press all the right buttons. The return of the hatchback is particularly satisfying. Look for the all-new 2016 Honda Civic Sedan in fall, 2016. Variants will follow.
