Nissan’s Murano CrossCabriolet doesn’t look like such a stupid idea now, does it?

Land Rover announced today at the Geneva auto show that it will build a droptop version of the Evoque, first teased in concept form at the 2012 New York auto show.

The announcement came with a publicity (stunt) video that shows a camouflaged Evoque cabrio driving the “ultimate urban test track:” the Crossrail commuter train tunnels being built under the streets of London, England.

At first glance, a convertible off-roader seems a ludicrous idea, but the Jeep Wrangler is a convertible, so why the hell not, right?

Naturally, the Evoque is less of a rock-crawler than a well-appointed mall-crawler, but that’s not the point: chopping the top off its most stylish model is a good way attract buyers for whom a convertible *car* simply isn’t acceptable.

The Evoque convertible is set to go on sale in 2016.
