While the FJ Cruiser was far from Toyota‘s top-seller, it’s certainly rightfully earned its place in history with a rabid, near-cultish following. The 2014 model year of the FJ Cruiser was unfortunately also its final year, much to the chagrin of the off-roading world.

Toyota Canada have just recalled approximately thirty-six [That’s a strangely specific estimate… –Ed.] 2014 FJ Cruisers in Canada due to a potential steering related issue. The FJ Cruiser’s steering system utilizes an ‘intermediate’ shaft which connects the steering wheel to the steering gear box. The recall concerns a possible inadequate weld on the shaft itself, running the risk of the weld separating.

We don’t need to tell you that if a weld fails on a major component in your steering system, serious injury or death may occur due to the complete and utter loss of the ability to steer your vehicle regardless of speed. Toyota says they’re not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths associated with this issue.

Owners of the potentially affected vehicles will receive a personal notification by first class mail. Toyota will replace the intermediate shaft with a new one (presumably, the updated one that won’t separate and potentially cause a major incident). If you’re reading this and want to verify that you’re not affected by it, please have your VIN ready and call the Toyota Customer Interaction Centre at 1-888-TOYOTA-8 (1-888-869-6828).
