Redesigned electric vehicle could be first of new Volt range
General Motors announced today their second-generation Chevrolet Volt will debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January.
First released in 2010, General Motors looks to expand on the Volt’s capabilities by increasing its range, though its limiting 2+2 seating arrangement will probably go unchanged.

The next-generation EV could herald a new Volt family of vehicles under the bowtie badge, just as Toyota has done with the Prius nameplate. A 5-seat MPV with the Volt’s electric drivetrain is also reported to be in the works to compete with the Toyota Prius V and Ford C-MAX.
While the Volt doesn’t sell in huge numbers, spreading the cost of the electric drivetrain architecture over more models could make the vehicles more affordable, especially in provinces without government rebates for electric vehicles.
Just last year, General Motors cut the price of the current generation Volt by over $5000.
