Australia’s Northern Territory is bringing back open limit to 200 km section of road. Could we do the same?
As part of a 12-month trial into speed limits, an election commitment made by the Northern Territory Transport Minister Peter Styles, a 200 km section of road will have its 130 km/h speed limit relaxed, replaced with an open, self-governed limit by drivers.
Could we institute open limits on certain rural stretches of highway in Canada without an increase in road fatalities?
Canada has some of the same rural road characteristics and problems as Australia – long stretches of highway with no towns or populated areas, large game crossing the road, and a significant landmass to traverse. However, we do have problems of weather (winter, specifically) Australia doesn’t have to deal with.
